Default New 993 C2S Owner with Questions!!!

Hey all - I'm new to the site having just bought a '97 C2S about 6 weeks
ago. I'll post some pics once I have a good one (if it ever stops raining
in NY!). HAve a few questions and I was hoping some of the more informed
members will share some insights with me.

1) After following proper protocols for checking oil level (25 min
warmup, level ground, etc.) I find that my oil gauge reads in the red.
When I check via the dipstick with the engine at idle, the oil level is
1/2 way upthe twisted indicator. Is this common for the gauge not to
register properly or is there something going on I should look at?

2) A/C runs at full blast when I turn it on (not on max, just on) no
matter how I set the fan speed or what temp I set it for. Again - is this
normal?

3) OK - I could probably find this in the owners manual but as long as
I'm asking - what are the climate control sliders for? What does the top
and botton one do and what is the difference between full left & full
right positioning?

4) Does anyone make a brighter bulb/head light assembly than stock?

5) And last for now - the car is jet black. What is the best way you guys
take out swirl marks on a faily fresh detailed car (it doesn't need to be
compounded, just polished or clayed). Whose stuff do you like best.

While I don't have a great photo, here are some stats: 14K miles, black on
black, speedline rims (being replaced by Fikse FM-10's & S02a's), Turbo
tail, Aluminium dials, lowerd adjustable suspension (haven't gotten under
it yet so not quite sure what's there but about 2" lower than US), free
flow exahust (again - not sure whose but adds about 10-15 HP with addition
of K&N filter).

Many thanks to everyone for assiting this novice.

Many thanks

MK

(Mark)

I think I can answer #2 accurately. I know the anwer to #3, but someone can state it better.

#2 you will see two switches with "snow flakes" on them. The top one is "max" A/C and it has no fan speed control. If you have only the bottom switch on, then you can control the fan speed.

Mark,

Congrats on the new car. Brett is correct on #2.

I'll answer #1 and leave the rest for someone else. Don't want to hog them all :-)

The only accurate way to check the oil level is at operating temp, on a level surface, with the car running. Check the dip stick then, it should be hald way. If the oil is new, it may be hard to see it. The guage in the car, IMHO, is just a close guess. Some cars closer than others.

Enjoy!!

Mark, on my 98 C2S, my gauge reads toward the low side while the oil is half way up the indicator. I would say this is normal, don't worry about what the gauge reads, use the dipstick for measuring.

On #3: The sliders adjust the amount of air that blows up on the windshield glass and down on your feet. Unfortunately, the effect of adjustment is barely noticable. I move these sliders only two times per year: In spring, I put them both all the way left, so that during the summer season, the air (cold by air conditioning) blows directly on me by vents in the dashboard. Then in fall, when I start using the heater, I move them both all the way right, so that the warm air blows up on windshield and down on the feet, but not much directly on me.

If you are half way up on the dip stick you should register something on the gauge. As it gets hotter the oil expands and the gague should continue upwards. If not check the sending unit, wiring and gague.

The slidders control airflow. Top is to send to defrost vents and bottom for heat vents(right side opens, left to close)

Meguires makes a nice swirl remover.

It is an unwritten Rennlist rule when you buy a new car you must post pics!
Oh yeah congrats on the car

Welcome Mark.
Question 1. The dipstick is the most sure method of checking your oil. My gauge seems to monitor the last half quart of oil. When I am down less than half a quart of oil, my gauge dips towards the red marking.

Thank you to all for chiming in. Concerning the oil gauge I read in the red even though the dip stick reads 1/2 way up the twirl. Funny thing is when I first received the car it was working fine, now it's not. I don't believe I'm burning any oil & it does not appear as if I have a leak. Should I add a bit to see if I get an accurate reading or just ignore the gauge and check by hand?

Ignore the gauge!! The dip stick is the only accurate way to meassure oil level.

My oil gauge worked when I first got my car. Stopped working for a while. After my last oil change it started working again. I did a lot of research on it. Bottom line - oil gauge not very accurate, dipstick only true measure if done correctly!

As already mentioned the oil guage is not that reliable,...on a previous 993 I also found it often spend time in the red zone whatever the oil level was....

Removing the rear arch liner, then cleaning the earth and electrical connection where the sensor meets the oil tank improved the responsiveness of the needle and the guage was useful once again...it may help

Enjoy your new car
