Default Engine smell inside car?

Summer is here in Southern California.

My sun roof is open and my windows are down.

This is first summer with my 993 and I'm noticing an engine smell while driving.

When installing my RSR's this past winter, the bottom cover of the engine was removed. Could this be the reason as I'm now more aware of what smells lke burning oil? The car runs at the right temps and maintians the proper oil level.

It's not a strong odor and absent when the windows are up, but none-the-less not that pleasant.

I plan on going by my mechanic tomorrow, but wanted to check with you guys first. Thanks!!!!

That is just the smell of an older Porsche. Learn to love it. Every older P car I have had always smelled a little bit like a blend of motor oil, gear oil , burning rubber, and exhaust. The perfect cocktail!

Totally normal. If you didn't have the smell I would be concerned

Hmmmm...the smell! I love the smell.

I love to stop at red lights on cold mornings with the top down after the engine has been warmed up and take it all in. What a way to wake up

Glade should bottle that stuff.

Since Porsche markets toasters, coffee makers, sunglasses, cothing etc. they should get into the cologne business

Like a fine cognac.... my boys talk about how they have come to love that smell. If what they say about your olfactory senses is true, their future will be blessed with some great memories.

At least its not "THAT" smell that you have to open windows to let it out!

I wouldn't describe my car's smell as an oil smell, but it is distinctive.
Is it the leather, the carpet or something but even the beach towel I keep in the front has the wonderful Porsche smell.

Ah, eu de' Porsche, it's one of the endearing qualities of Porsche ownership.

Most of us like the smell and wouldn't want to mask it with a little tree hanging from the rearview mirror.

Default I'm certainly good with the "aroma"....

..in fact, I love the interior smell everytime get in the car. I was just concerned about the oily aroma which is noticable when driving.

I'm resting at ease after reading the supplied thread and finding out it's just a normal aspect from the heat exhanges.

Thanks for your replies.

The sun is out early and I'm off for a drive up the coast to stimulate all five senses!!!

Having driven a brand new Nissan Morano for the last two months while my car was being painted, it was shocking to get back in my car and be confronted with "the smell". There is an adjustment from "new car smell" to "air-cooled 911" smell.

But I don't want to dismiss any exhaust issues you may be dealing with. I don't smell exhaust or burning oil and I find that "the smell" is not noticable with the top down, so you may indeed have a problem not related to "the smell"

Well.. Another possibility is that your lower valve cover gasket is leaking, and the leak happens to fall on the heat exchanger, maybe that's what you are smelling.

Peep under the car and check on the top of the heat exchanger to see if you see any fresh oil spots.

Yup, this is very possibe. Happened to mine a month ago, burning smell when the car is stopped. After a drive, let the engine run, get out and look under where the mufflers are, if you see some smoke, it's the lower valve.

Ditto that. It's normally the lower left valve cover and the gasket is only about 18 bucks. I finally fixed mine when wisps of oil smoke started passing me at stop lights.
