Default Newbie: To Boot or Not to Boot?

Hi,

I live in Atlanta and Jim Ellis presently services my new 993. I asked
one of the mechanic if he deemed it necessary to utilize the convertible boot. I further explained that I will put 150-200 miles a month on the car. He stated that up to 98 % of his customers don’t use the boot and not to worry about damaging the cloth etc. I have a windscreen; to that extent, I do not see the fabric flapping around even on the highway.

Can anyone offer any factual input on this subject?

Have a great week

Well the owner's manual states that it is a good idea to use the boot for prvention of damage to the headliner. It is a PITA to put on, but with time it gets faster and easier. I would use it, plus it makes the car look better. Just my .02

Few facts are available. I boot. I find that at any speed over about 50 mph I get give pretty substantial "flapping" and I do not believe the fabric will take it for long before the headliner gets damaged. I also have the wind deflector installed (which is a nice improvement). It's a trade-off of the 1 minute it takes to boot versus your comfort regarding repair of the top and the cost.

If I'm just going to be around town I leave it off. If I park the car and it's really sunny outside, then I close the top so the sun won't damage the headliner (or the interior for that matter). I think that the sun would do more damage than the wind to the headliner at slow speeds. Also, the headliner is not that expensive and is easily replaceable if need be.

If I plan to drive it on the highway at over 70mph for long periods, then I boot.

Disagree with the mechanic. Use the boot. You will ruin the liner and cause unnecessary wear. With some practice only take about 3 minutes to put boot on.
