Considering the air intake in the photo directly above the distributors (i.e., just to the left of the varioram) faces the sky through the rear spoiler, I don't think you would need to cover it. Every time it rains it's going to collect water.
BTW, likely a stupid question, but what is that intake for? I've always thought it was for the heater...

Absolutely true--however, considering we don't want to flood the heater intake, we might as well cover it is my thought.
