If after speaking with Stutgart show the car is real and verifies the owner, I am also going to confirm the title with DMV, I am thinking these are the next step for me to take if I choose to go with the shipping route.

1. Seller fax smog certificate, service receipts, and service booklet
2. Buyer Paypal deposit $500
3. Local Rennlister/Pelicanite inspection if possible
4. Shop inspection at buyer expense
5. Put money into escrow account with the following terms
o Nothing bad shows up on the inspections
o Transfer money when signed title is received and car arrives
o Split escrow cost
6. Buyer pays shipping

What do you think? Am I missing or overlooking some important step?

thanks,
anthony

If you roadtrip it back, DEFINATELY US HWY 89 through ID and Utah. Those who know the mountain region would agree the scenery is fantastic.

I think your steps are right on, although step 5.1 (nothing bad shows up on the inspections) should be something like "car materially as represented". You've already agreed to buy it, IMO the inspection is just to prove you're not getting taken.

For the price, you're still way ahead of the game with all of the low points listed in your previous message (tires, sunroof, etc). Assuming everything checks out, as mentioned earlier have the inspecting shop change oil & filters and drive 'er home.

Just bandwagon jumping on the "sounds like a good deal if no major issues come up" train, and the "ROADTRIP" train. I bought mine in South Florida and drove it home to MD... nowhere near the trip Andreas took, but about as fun as hours of driving through the greater scenic Florida and Georgia I-95 swamp corridor can be.

For your sunroof fix, it should/could be easy and sounds like an issue I had... a loose screw. Well, a loose screw on the sunroof, not me. More specifically, if one corner - on the front of the sunroof "sags" or just doesn't quite get up there, then this is an easy fix. Half open sunroof, pop down leather roof panel and slide back into roof to get out of way. Along tracks on side there is a pin that glides along and up a channel to close it. That assembly is most likely just in need of a phillips screwdriver and about a half turn of the wrist. Pull the roof panel back up and pop into place. IF (again, IF) that is your problem then you could have it shutting tight in less than 5 minutes. Even at a good price, there is really no reason to sell a Porsche with something like that wrong - or a few bulbs burnt out. It's like when you see a car listed as "perfect except worn floor mats" on a $50,000 car. Floor mats cost $50. Seriously.

Checked with DMV and Portland Police. Car has clean title, no lien, and is not reported stolen.

Got service records from Stutgart. Clutch as replaced in 2002 at 50K. New front brakes & rotor in 2005 at 75K. Couple of small fixes. Oil changes around 7.5K. Thanks to Jess @ Stutgart.

Carfax didn't show one of the previous owners of my car. It is very unreliable.

Call the seller on the phone, ask al the regular questions about the title, history and who has been working on the car. Call the mechanic who maintained the car and ask him about it.
This gives you a bit of background. Tell the seller you'll be bringing the money. Get a quick flight out there and check the car out yourself. Drive it testing everything that you can.
Then ask the seller if he minds getting it checked out by a mechanic whom you have already contacted in the area before you left.
If all is well, contact your insurance company and give him the money and drive the car home.
Good luck, It looks like a great car. Chris
Unfortunately I can't see the ad as ebay is a blocked site here at work, but it is my understanding that if you won it you bought it. Why all the talk about PPI's, background checks & checking the car out at this point? These are great things to check BEFORE bidding....as long as the title is clear, the car is yours unless something was specifically mis-represented.

Sounds like a nice buy, and I'll check out the ad when I get home

In the ad the guy says he bought it in 1999. I think that the change in ownership is probably related to the lien - ie, he paid off the loan last year and got the clear title.

Maybe I'm too lax, but I see a tempest in a tea pot here. Auction had 27 decent pics of the car, it was serviced by a well known shop and bought at a very good price. With some checking to validate the car & that the seller is a real person (which Anthony has done), and a sanity check of the car it looks like a good deal.

Glossary

* First Owner
When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership.
* Fleet Vehicle
Vehicle was registered or sold to a company that manages vehicle fleets.
* Lease
When someone leases a car from a dealer, the dealer actually sells the vehicle to a leasing company. The leasing company then collects payments for the vehicle from the new owner for 24, 36, 48 or more months. A leasing company can be an independent car dealer or a car manufacturer.
* New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles.
* Ownership History
CARFAX defines an owner as an individual or business that possesses and uses a vehicle. Not all title transactions represent changes in ownership. To provide estimated number of owners, CARFAX proprietary technology analyzes all the events in a vehicle history. Estimated ownership is available for vehicles manufactured after 1994 and titled solely in the US including Puerto Rico. Dealers sometimes opt to take ownership of a vehicle and are required to in the following states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Please consider this as you review a vehicle's estimated ownership history.
* Title Issued
A state issues a title to provide a vehicle owner with proof of ownership. Each title has a unique number. Each title or registration record on a CARFAX report does not necessarily indicate a change in ownership. In Canada, a registration and bill of sale are used as proof of ownership.
