Default Weekend 993 work swap

The A/C expansion valve in my 993 have not been working properly for the past two years, replacing the expansion valve is major work, which also involves replacing the dryer, flushing the systems, adding oil, and etc... So I have been putting it off thinking maybe this problem will just go to the grave with me.

As it turns out TJ needed some tune up items done on his car, stuff that I am very familiar with and TJ recently just replaced his evaporator core so he is very familiar on how to replace the expansion valve. So we decided to swap a little work.

Worked started today at 8:00am and finished at 6:00pm. (Including testing)

TJ's 993 - replaced dual distributor belt, caps, rotors, 12 spark plugs, and installed a RSR muffler. :P

Robin's 993 - replace the expansion valve, dryer, system flush, new oil, new freon.

I thought I got the better end of the bargain as replacing the expansion valve is major work on the 993, the gas tank had to come out, the fuse box, the wirewall panel, front wheel off to replace the dryer, and various system pressure test, vaccum draw etc...

And we happned to do all these work on the hottest day of the year, it was probably 100 degrees out there today. At the end of the day both of us were feeling dizzy and ready to pass out. In the end my 993 is showing 12-13 degree C from the A/C, and TJ's motor is again happy!

Awesome work TJ!!!!

Here are some pictures to share.

Both cars in the garage getting ready for major work

Gas tank is out, TJ trying on the 993 trunk for size.

Fill her up!

Work complete!!! Time to hit home. A productive Saturday!!!!

Default THANKS ROBIN

Talk about sore!!! I got home around 8:30 last night and was in bed by 9:30!

I have to say the car feels great, Im glad that I was able to "schedule" the RSR upgrade while we swapped the cars - I found myself running down I-15, accelerating in short bursts just to hear the exhaust - what a difference above 4k RPM. Idle is different as well - more of a muscular exhaust note. My wife noticed the difference when I pulled into the garage!!

My car needed the TLC - my ignition system was trashed definitely needed new ignition parts. I think Robin got the worse deal - his job was more greasy AND he spent the entire time at the back of the garage in the 100 degree heat and sun.

I had a good time and look forward to seeing everyone at the BBQ.

Thanks again!

TJ,

Thank you so much for fixing my A/C, it is now nice and cool!!!

Even though it was tough work in the heat, but I really had fun, I haven't had this much fun in awhile.

Thanks

Robin

Hey Robin,

Wanna have more of that "fun" at my place? I've got to do another plug change soon.
...just kidding, of course. Sorry I'm going to have to miss your shin dig.

I sure wouldn't mind buying some A/c tools and learning that part next. I like to just add to my knowledge and tools collection.

I think my next tackle with my 993 is the cruise control motor. I need to take it out as I need to test it to make sure that it works before looking anywhere else.

Thanks Robin for offering to help me change my oil. Unfortunately I work weekends so I was never free when you were. I couldn't wait to change the oil as the oil level gauge was always in the red and I had no idea what kind of oil was in the car. So changing it was the best option. I used the good old red top Mobil 1.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Sorry I missed your oil change excercise, it would have been fun figuring out to do it without removing the wheel.

The only special tools needed for the A/C repair was the vaccum pump to pull all the debris and junk out of the A/C and testing for leaks and then there is the manifold gauges to charge up the A/C. Othere than that, all the tools were just standard hand tools.

I am starting to notice there there is a issue with the electronics on the 993 cruise control acuator. There seems to be a cold solder issue on the circuit board. I have noticed two of them already. You will need to take the intake off in order to get the cruise control acuator out. Major work, which will leave your car parked for several days.

BTW, we are having our 993 ground BBQ party this Saturday at my house... but sounds like you will have to work on that day?

Actually I have my military reserve duty this weekend. I was suppose to be getting married this weekend so I guess depending on how you look at it, could have been a good thing or a bad thing.

I had part of the intake off before and was able to get to the motor to check it out. I'm not 100% sure I need to yank the whole thing off. I just took the blower off and some other various parts and I was able to get to it pretty good if I remember right.

I'm not up for not having my car parked for days.. I pretty much am just going to yank the cruise control motor and then put everything back together and work on the cruise control motor for a while outside the car, that way I can still drive it.

It will be interesting to see how it looks inside.
