Default 908 at Loudon Yesterday

Very surprised to see a 908 at NHIS in Loudon NH yesterday. Very cool, car, driver and mechanic. It had just been restored. Gorgeous!

GREAT PICTURES! Thanks for sharing. Weren't most 908s coupes? Is this a special "hillclimb" version. You may be interested in this photo I took of a rare 907 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2004:

I think the Bentley as a chase car was a bit over the top. My chase car is a Craftsman.

Nice pic Steve, Thanks.

Dave,

On closer examination, I think your are correct... I glanced and assumed it was an old benz.

Don't these engines (908) require a teardown after apppx 100 hrs?? If so, its good to have some Bently type money laying around.

Either that's a Targa Florio car, or a replica of a Targo Florio car, or I'm completely off base. I'm pretty sure its one of those three choices though. Thanks for posting the photos.

You are correct, I heard the driver telling Blaine (another RLster) that it was indeed a Targa Florio Car, chassis #16. This chassis did not race; it was the back-up car. This was the real deal. I think the mechanic said the HP was @350 and the weight was 1200 lbs. Looked like a very nasty Go-Cart.
The owner also said that one of the cars that did race was recently auctioned for $2.3 million.

Blaine may chime in later; he is the one that recognized the car.

Here is a poor quality poster of the 908 driven in the Targa Florio.

In my (limited) experience, 100 hours between rebuilds would be very, very long. 25 hours is probably more like the usual rebuild period... and that's pretty true for most highly stressed racing engines. IMHO. And... I'm the guy that can't tell a Benz from a Bentley.

Dudley,

What did the 908 sound like on the track? It must have been pretty awesome.

Rich, I was at the skid pad when to 908 was running, so I did not hear it on the track. I did hear the mechanic fire it up in preparation for loading it on the trailer. Actually I heard him fire it up half a dozen times, it had a bit of a stalling problem. Sounded great.

I found a couple historical photos. I must have heard the chassis number wrong because the #21 car is chassis number 09.
