The ScanTool zip contains a number of files. Unzip it in a directory.
Replace the scantool.cfg file with my scantool.txt file
Rename scantool.txt to scantool.cfg

I built the circuit as shown and it works. You could build it.
Or you could buy one of the units being used in the 964 thread.
I don't see value in making pcb, etc for my circuit, since others are already
available. My design is definitely not worst case. It is least components
and still works case. :-)

The reporting of trouble codes is correct for all DME, CCU, SRS, etc. They can
also be cleared. The other stuff Inputs, Actual Values, etc have some things
working and some not. I believe more can be made to function.
When you press the Input button. The tool queries the DME. The DME responds.
The scantool.cfg file tells the scantool how to display this data.

Yes. I had a couple of trouble codes in my Climate Control that I cleared.
It reports Airbag codes. The code reported will tell you what is wrong.
There is a button to clear any codes stored.

Yes. And;
The circuit is used to convert the RS232 serial port interface into OBD
interface.

Is the scantool software available at scantool.net? They have scantool 1.12 but not 3. Am I in the right place?

Nice to see that the 993 with early obd1 works with the software. What we need now is someone with software background to complete the software. Get the idle adaption working and the other bits that the hammer does!

Jason,

I had to put jumpers in my circuit to change where the wakeup goes
and where the response comes from, as well as address and baudrate.
These were changes from 964 to 993. Since the 1996 had to be OBD2
compliant I wonder if there might be other tweaks?

The point I was trying to get across was, "unchanged from MY95" it will work with MY96+ (using your mods.)

Only the USA/CAN based DME control unit is OBD2, every other control unit in the car (and the DME control unit for ROW) should communicate the same way the MY95 does. The only issue you might find is a slight timing problem with the airbag controller for MY98 but Doug could fix that easily (if the problem does actually exist).

I'm trying to workout something with Durametric Software for a release of an OBD1 program and connectors.
The two main problems seem to be that some 95's had OBD1 and others had OBD2 style connectors
and also the Motronic version was different most Motronic 2.1.1 or just 2.1 version of some sorts.
I'm sure the package should be released in June 06 sometime. I looking forward to having a full diagnostics software
that is accurate and that you don't need to guess what the right number is suppose to be.
I would like it to be as close to the capabilities of the Porsche diagnostics computer and to show the same results. Chris

No changes. It works and the electrical levels looked good with a scope.
The interface talks to all controllers at rev 1.

Let me know of your results.

My car has the OBD2 connector.
The round connector of the earlier 993 has different pin assignments.
I believe the pin assignment is the only difference to getting the tool to
function.

The tool tells you what motronic interface is installed. You don't need to
enter any information to get all reports in my first email of this thread.

This tool works on 964 and later 1995 993. No reason it wont work on
earlier 1995 993. The 964 has the same connector as early 1995 993.

I suspect that most 993 owners would buy a complete functioning setup
at a reasonable price.

I made a short cable. Pins that plug into either round or OBD2 connector.
The other end has a ribbon cable connector. I leave this connected to
my OBD connector.

Plug in a ribbon cable that's connected to the interface, and I'm all set.
I didn't buy any special connector. I can put the laptop on the bench or in
the car.
