Default Air bag inspections

Does anyone know why Porsche requires airbag inspections every couple of years? I don't know of any other car manufacturer requiring this.

What exactly do you mean by "requires"? I don't see how an inspection would be useful myself. Nor do I know of anyone who's ever had their SRS inspected.

Besides, most shops & dealers won't even look at airbag components the wrong way, much less touch something... I think the universal policy is "if the dummy light ain't on, it's fine."

EDIT: oh, I just realized it's on the scheduled maintenance list. Weird!

Exactly! I've never seen this before.

I had this inspection done on the PPI for the car I bought. The dealer told me that they check the resistors and contacts to ensure that they are receiving a signal. It was $50 for me to do it and it made the wife feel better since it included the passenger side as well.

Sounds like a money making deal for the dealers....

It's a money making scheme. If there were a problem, intermitent or otherwise, with the contacts or resistors then you would get a warning light. The only thing you need to check is that the cover is not split or damaged in any way.

No light = no problem.

That was my thought too. It would be a HUGE liability for a car manufacturer if the warning light didn't effectively indicate a problem in the system. Would probably cause a recall. I only know a little about the design of airbag ECUs, but I do know that they put a lot of effort into the programming, for obvious reasons.

I did have the Warranty Mgr. at a local dealer tell me that "we absolutely check the airbag during service....we look at the airbag light!".
