SO, could it be detrimental for me to unplug my spoiler and just leave it in the fixed position? I would REALLY like for this to be ok!

fixed up or down? up is ok. down would probably not be ok, as the reduced cooling could be bad. porsche would probably prefer NO spoiler on the 993 carrera. this is why it is stowed below 50mph.

Don't know if I would do that Adam...although I do hear what you are saying. The electric wings in the "up" position look like an airplane seat-table when deployed, and I've never been a fan of the way it looks "at speed." It would be nice, however, to keep it in the down position for the clean look at speed, wouldn't it?

My thinking would be a loss of cooling capability at speed, but I can't be certain. It just seems that with the directional intake fins on the wings (electric or not), that Porsche was deliberately directing cool air at speed into the engine compartment. When and/or if you unplug it, you can also disable the warning lamp and speed sensor on your dash gauge.

Can anyone truly confirm the cooling issue will be the case? Or is this only speculation? i agree, the design looks this way, but has anyone tested it?

You could always try it and watch the oil temp on the highway to see if it rises above your "normal" position.

Mine runs about 830, even in FL heat, so I would agree with you on that.

Audi TT coupe had no spoiler when first introduced - they had to retro-fit a spoiler to stop it dissapearing backwards into the scenery. All the Audi TT's now have a spoiler.
Now you know what not to do to a 993 spoiler.....

I agree too, I always thought the point of the rear spoiler was to reduce lift rather than provide downforce. With the spolier in the raised position it must slow down the airflow over the back of the car, but it simply can't transmit any meaningful downforce through the flimsy mounting points.

adam- what sort of credentials are you looking for? there are probably not too many 'porsche engineers-in-charge-of-993-wing-design' on the site. so this is mostly educated guessing. we'd ALL love to pull the spoiler motor out. perhaps you could do the board a favor by yanking yours. if the engine bursts into flames, let us know- and post pics.

It is a spoiler, not a wing. It "spoils" the flow of the air over the car, reducing the lift that is inherent in the design with the spoiler down. A wing would be required to apply "down-force". Somewhere on the web there is a comparison chart of various spoilers and wings done in a wind tunnel. I recall it included earlier Turbo (tea trays", but I don't think it went beyond 964s.

It might help with cooling, but those slats function when the spoiler is down also, as did early 911 grills.
