Default Look, Ma! No Broomsticks!

I replaced my hood and engine lid shocks this afternoon. It was even easier than I expected. I didn't find that "preparing" the hood shocks (per p-car.com instructions) helped. The clips are spring steel and are easy to push onto the ball joints without doing anything to them. I did, however, find the p-car.com instructions to be invaluable, as they gave me the confidence to know that I could do it myself. I didn't even drop any small parts into the nether regions.

BTW, I think my dealer did loose a clip, as one was missing, and the rod that it should have been on was placed in the hole backwards, as if to hide the fact that something was wrong. They told me they had to undo the shocks on the engine lid because they were the shorter cab shocks, and they needed to get the lid higher.

Anyway, thanks to Robin @ p-car.com and others who have posted on this topic. It's great to lift the hood or engine lid without looking for a "broomstick."

Sometime this summer I need to get around to it.

Good job.

Hey Bruce,

Did you find the driver's side a PITA? I did the pass side in about 5 minutes. I looked at the space at driver's side and abandoned hope. Then to my surprise, the hood stayed open nice and firm with just the one new shock. So I'm leaving it ...till I HAVE to anyway.

BTW, is that you in the avatar? I've been a Strat man for decades, but I *just* fulfilled my Les Paul dream!! Got an 05 Standard a couple of weeks ago and can't stop playing it. Having both is like having your cake AND eating it too. Damn these expensive hobbies! (or is that addictions?).

Sorry I didn't see these replies/questions sooner.

Robin, thanks, the PO gave it to me with the car (the metal one), the wood one I meticulously hand-crafted myself.

Edward, I assume you're talking about the engine lid. I noticed the same thing, that after I did the right one, the lid stayed open. But I figured it would be better to just do both. What I did for the far end on the left one was stick my right arm into the hole, up to my elbow, at which point I could feel everything with my hand. I could not see in there at the same time, but I was able to work by feel.

Yep, that's me in the avatar. I've always been a Gibson man, but I do have a cheap Strat, and I dig the Stratty tones it gets. Great for Jimi, blues, etc. Check out my site!

I replaced all four of mine. Did the fronts first and then I did the rear, six months later.

Bruce,

Actually, had a brain fart. I was talking about the hood shocks.

And great site! Very cool sounds and tasty licks. You've got tone, friend ...some very righteous tone! Kudos!

Nice guitar- I play the same, a '57 Goldtop reissue. Can't beat it. Although my flame-maple U.S. strat with Lindy Fralins is nice too.
