Question Cleaning Ignition Switch Ring

The big metal disc that surrounds my ignition switch is looking very old and crummy. I've cleaned it and put 303 on it, but it looks the same. I'm beginning to think "shoe polish." What should I use to make it look new (black!) again?

Thanks.

I ended up buying a new brushed aluminum piece to replace mine because I always thought it looked worn no matter how much I cleaned it. I have the brushed aluminum bezels in the car and this was a nice compliment. Got it thru Vertex.

I used some vinyl polish and that made it look pretty good.

Shoe polish is probably a good idea but might not be enough. I bet Surflex would work well, too.

just paint it to match your exterior color .. in my case, polar silver .. beats the cheap plastic look.

A light coat of Wurth or Rustoleum Satin Black will make it look factory new, and it won't oxidize like the stock plastic finish does. Or paint it body color as Rob suggested.

Just buy a new one, I paid maybe $1USD last year for one from Sunset Imports (retail is currently $4.67USD), part number 911-613-160-01-70B.

Success: I tried everything, incl. shoe polish, nothing worked. I think the shoe polish just rubs off, as the plastic (which I originally thought was metal) is not porous. Finally, at my wife's suggestion, I tried some mineral oil. Rubbed it in (maybe it is porous???), wiped of the excess, and it looks just about good as new now.

I replaced mine in minutes with a Porsche part that cost less than five-bucks!

It just unscrews CCW. I think there’s a little dimple on the outer edge you can put a pick in to get it turning.

Leatherique sells a black dye for use on rubber / trim - http://www.leatherique.com/products.html

Works perfectly and is very versatile.

I use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.......just rub it over the surface and it removes all the oxidation, then hit it with some rubber dressing from Griots.......the eraser truly is like magic and makes it look brand new......lasts about 3-6 months depending how great you want it to look)

Try cleaning and then apply Back to Black or buy a new one as they're very inexpensive.
