Hoosier S04 size questions

Hoosier S04 size questions
I am currently running MPSC's in a 235/285 configuration and am thinking of running a 245/285 Hoosier S04f/S05r set up. I've read in the archives that the 285 Hoosier is narrower than the 285 MPSC and perhaps more like a 265 MPSC. Can anyone corroborate or deny this assertion? Would I be better off with a 225 up front??
I have Fikse 8" and 10" wheels with 51mm/63mm rear offsets and moderate fender rolling.
Note: I'm thinking of switching brands because the Hoosiers are cheaper and because, well, I want to maybe go faster.

yes i've run both the MPSC and hoosier tires. The MPSC is just a bit wider, although i would not say that that the hoosier is like a 265. if memory serves me correctly the hoosier is 0.1" narrower than the MPSC. I know the MPSC to be wider as it caused some rub on the rear fender and the hoosier did not.

Okay, Boris, thanks for the help! I've never run Hoosiers and know very little about them. Oh, one more question: was it the S04's that people were having cording issues in the rear?

Those sizes will work, and as stated above, the difference is small between the two. My experience is that while the Hoosiers are less money up front, when you factor in the much shorter life, they are more costly than the MPSCs. If you want to stick better and go faster, the Hoosiers are the way to go....but the "saving" rationalization won't work.

Second Bull's comments on savings. I think the newest run are S06's in the 285. There is a thread going now in the racing forum on the "new" Hoosier.

I think the issue with the premature cording is ancient history...it was in the early runs of the S04s and has since been resolved.
When the S04s came out, Hoosier was clear in not recommending running the 285s on the rears of our cars...the tire was specifically designed as a front tire (Vette's, Vipers, I think) & not designed to take the load that a rear engine car will put on a tire when loaded up. For that reason, I run 245/275 and am very happy with the combination.
I did speak with Bob Woodman (Woodman Tires) at Road Atlanta this weekend and he told me that they expect that the 285 will be different for the S06 and he'd be more comfortable with putting it on the rear except for a track like Daytona.

On the racing forum, I thought someone asked about mixing the 06's witht he 05's on the car. I read it to mean that for the rears they were issuing the 06's. I could be mistaken since I was reading for general interest only as I still run 17's.

Thanks for your help!! I went ahead and ordered eight P285/30ZR18 tires. They're only $127 ea, $7 shipping.
These are late Jan/Feb 2005 build and have revised manufacturing to avoid the cording issues with the early S04's.

i've spoken to Jeff Speer several times at Hoosier. Personally I admire Hoosier Race Tires and have always been a fan. Although i occassionally give them a bad time for letting a Korean Company catch up to them and even some may argue surpass them. So I'm really looking forward to trying the S06's.
I've run the S03, S04, and SO5's.
S04's: They had premature coordining issue in both their early production and with improper tire pressure. These tires like to run on the very high side (i.e. 37-40psi hot). Without the hi pressure they do have problems.
S05's: I've actually had more problems on the S05's with the 285 size. Specifically in the rear. I got almost nothing out of these and Jeff swears that this was unusual. I know that the 993 rear end weight is a big issue on these tires. If you look at their weight specs you'll notice the 285/30 has a much lower weight spec than other Hoosiers. I suspect that our 993's are just on the heavy side for these tires and it should be something that you watch carefully.
So this year i'm looking forward to the S06's. They reconstructed the entire shoulder of the tire, so i suspect that this will be the tire of choice (at least for me).
Please do NOT take anything that i said as a negative on Hoosier. They really are a great company and i have the utmost respect for them.

Thanks so much for the pointers. Jeff Spears recommended that I run the pressures 32-34 cold to achieve 40-42 hot, with tire temps of 140-160 degrees in the spring, 180-200 degrees in the summer. Also, he said to avoid a greater than 20 degreee temp difference across the tread.
