Joe:

I cannot speak for Bilstein, but having been in this business for 30+ years and sold/installed a LOT of Bilstein shocks over that time, I can offer some input on this,.....

Bilstein's limited lifetime warranty is one of the best in the industry insofar as product support & execution. Their shocks are guaranteed against failures caused manufacturing defects as long as you own the car. If they break (internally or externally) or leak, they will give you a new shock, without any questions and they are FAR better than others about that. IMHO, they are a 24 kt gold outfit.

The warranty will not cover shocks that are damaged from bottoming out, improper installation, or wear & tear over time. Shocks are just like any moving part on a car: they can and do eventually wear out and again, IMHO they offer a very reasonably priced rebuild/revalve service for those who partake of such things.

Having sold/installed a LOT of parts over the years, drop me a phone call and I'd be happy to tell you which part manufacturers are substandard in this regard and which ones are not. Bilstein has been FAR better than the industry average over the time I've been in business and thats just one reason why I sell them.

Product support is Everything.

Just one man's opinion, though and YMMV.

That's why the best course of action is to buy from Steve, as I've learned the hard way.

Thanks Steve. That's at least reassuring. Kinda just scary with the price of these. I guess it seems like I have heard a lot of bad stories on here, but a lot of it is probably the case of just the bad issues being highlighted.

The other thing about Bilstein's "lifetime warranty" is I was told that if used under "off road" conditions (ahem, read that as "track use" gents!), they are not covered. So the simple "solution" is to wonder aloud to Bilstein how such a high-performance shock could degrade so quickly under regular street use ...
Not sure if it'll work as they aren't dopes over there, but it may be worth a try.
