SAI Help, Codes P0410/P1411 - San Diego
I'm normally on the 928 board but I'm in San Diego visiting my brother in law who has a very nice '98 993 cab. I was able to fix his non operating top thanks to this excellant list. He was also complaining of his CEL being on so I took it to Autozone and pulled codes P0410 & P1411. In doing a search of this list it appears they're related and this is a known SAI problem with 993s. He's not mechanically inclined and thus can't do his own work, does anyone recommend someone in the San Diego area to do this? How much should he expect to spend? He has 72,000 miles on it and it's his daily driver. He sayes he spends lots of time in rush hour traffic which sounds like contributes to the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

If his problem is plugged SAI ports, they can be flushed at about a cost of $1K.
If his problem is being brought about by excessive oil burning, he may need a valve job at approx. $5k.
Hope it's plugged ports.

Think the choices in SD are as follows, put in my order of preference:
Expect 1 and 2 to provide the best dollar value
1) Black Forest
2) Mind Over Motor Sports
3) AJ USA
4) Dealer

I would also reccomend Dieter's in downtown S.D. and European in Vista. Both are excellent. I also have experience with Black Forest and they are very good as well.

Before you open the wallet for a port flush or a valve job make sure that the secondary air pump is operating and that the solenoid valve between the secondary air pump and the check valve is operating. I had the secondary air code and it was a vacuum line to the solenoid valve that had come off.

Or just simply replace the SAI valve and check valve to see if the codes go away. The parts is only $150, if you drive up to LA I would be glad to change it for him.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Robin, if it was my car I'd take your offer up in a heartbeat. Unfortunately my brother in law is insisting on taking it to the stealership! Oh well...

Point him towards this forum and he'll find out that owning these cars doesn't have to cost a fortune in maintenance.... then he can use the money he saves on mods!

I suspect the dealer will try and sell him on a valve guide replacement $5000.00 bill.....
had the same problem on my car at about the same mileage. The check valve was stuck wide open.
the SAI system was being used as an exhaust system :-))
I just flushed the system and installed a new chk valve via help from this list. All is well X thousand miles later.
But if I had to take my car somewhere I'd take it to places this list recommendations before I'd take my car to the dealer.... but that's just me.

$5000 valve guide replacement bill - Exactly! They told him to fix the CEL it would cost $3000 and since he was spending that much he might as well spring for valve guides for $5000. Sad to say he probably will. Mumbled something about convenience...
