Engine cost?
A used 964/993 engine from a wreck runs $6-8k (with no rebuild). I think the range I got quoted for having a new engine built was $15-25k, depending on what you select when building it (and keeping it a 3.6). I'm not sure that you can buy a new, crated 3.6 and believe that if you could it would be really silly pricing.
It's costs like these that drive people (pun intended
) to Spec Miata's where a new engine is $2500 and a good used race engine is $800.

I recently (about 2-3 weeks ago) looked up pricing for remanufactured longblocks from Porsche (prices are in US dollars and do not include core charges -- I don't know those figures).
986 - $6963.57
996 - $7951.74
997 - $8561.44
993 - $18196.14
996TT - $20741.10 (short block) <=- Longblock will cost a bunch more.
GT3 - $26531.50
CGT - $79872.79
For the 993/964 engines the prices have more than doubled since 2003 (was $7800USD). This doesn't answer your question 100% but it will give you an idea...

when you think about it, a lot of us bought our 993 cars used...after they had depreciated a bit and the rich folks were tired of them
. The folks buying them new were certainly very solid middle class. Recall a 993 in 1997 cost about $63,000, a big nut for a lot of us. Financed for 60 months with 10% down, + interest, that car payment would be around $1,300 a month, + at least $100 a month for car insurance, ouch!
The thought of replacing a 993 engine for $18,000....sheeeeet, I am just a Po Boy {That would be one BIG chicken coming home to roost!}! I might just park the car and let entropy take over the car to a greater extent than presently underway.
Perhaps the car would undergo spontaneous combustion? That would be a blessing.
Porsche parts prices have been going up steadily for the past few years. The decline of the dollar against the Euro has not helped. I don't see prices going down anytime soon!
I had better throttle back here, dummy up and take the advice of Greg Brown as written below in my signature piece!
Also note, as I wrote the comments above, I was in a fowl
mood. Wifey had just bitched me out for repairing the air conditioning. A replacement hose and labor was about $650...I can see why some guys are going to Spec 944 and Spec Miata cars.

My thoughts exactly in terms of the price for parts. Many of these parts that were considered options when new are starting to be no longer manufactured by Porsche Germany
