~~DIY Suspension Install for Dummies~~~

Jeff,
I think this qualifies for the "post of the year" award...
Hey a nit and a question....
The nit is... the rear setup is posted twice.
The question:
"If additional lowering/raising is desired, it is helpful to know that for each 1mm adjustment on the shock results in about a 2mm adjustment in fender height."
Why is this - I don't get it. My understanding is...
The collar on the shock is adjustable up and down - this is obvious in the photos.
The lower spring perch rests on the locking collars.
The spring rests directly on the lower spring perch.
The upper perch compresses the spring a bit when it is torqued.
The weight of the car rests on the upper perch and the car is bolted to the upper perch.
So..... Lowering the collar 1 mm will lower the car 1 mm.
No ????

Wayne,
I think the lowering/raising ratio is a simple by-product of the suspension design. Think lever. The A-arm pivots in one place and the strut is mounted between the inner pivot point and the hub.
The flipside would be a traditional solid axle setup found on a standard pickup. Shim the leaf spring pack, or add a coil spacer, and the truck will be lifted an amount equal to the shim/spacer. No actual lever action here.

Andreas,
Gotcha..... The amount of extra lowering is the ratio of: (distance between the inner pivot point
to the hub) : (distance between inner pivot point to the shock attachment point) times the amount
that you turn down the locking collars. Jeff is saying the ratio is around 2 or so. Thanks.

Great write-up, including torque specs and tools required!! Great stuff and certainly a future reference for many years to come.
Thanks for taking the time to document and assemble this suspension installation manual. This should have a Porsche part number on it

Wow, Jeff, the DIY is beautiful!!!
How do you mix text and images??? When I did my SAI flush post (https://rennlist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258460), the text came first followed by all the images run together. It still works, but not what I had in mind when I put it together.
Again, nice job.

Rennlist forum software did not like me very much as I was posting this thread. It took a LONG time to show up between the time I hit the Submit button and the time it was displayed. It must have uploaded but not displayed for me, thus prompting me to reupload again.
I've deleted the duplicate post. Sooooo, look everyone, the amount of work to do just drop by about 1/4.

It might be hard to notice, but I am actually hosting the photos from a different website (my own website) and simply displaying them here using the <img> tags. You might also notice that if you click on any of the pictures above, you will be taken to the larger version on my site.
That being said, you can achieve the same effect by becoming a Rennlist member and uploading your pictures to the free gallery. You can then link to them from your gallery into your posts, me thinks (I've never tried it).
P.S. Are you a pilot?
