Default SS Brake lines.

I'm looking to buy some SS DOT brake lines. Recommendations on where to get them?

Just a couple of things. First, do not use price as the determining factor when buying SS lines. You want QUALITY here. Second, all Cupcars come with rubber lines. Most teams don't change them out. Those that do generally do it for safety so nothing damages the line if debris is hit on the track.

Thumbs down

Don't bother; get OE. Less chance of anything going wrong.

I installed SS lines on my old '84 Carrera; noticed absolutely no change in brake feel. Then started hearing a ton of stories of these things failing right at the connector end of the line. Then I personally witnessed a failure on a friend's 914 while he was nailing the brakes at the end of an autocross. Nice puddle of fluid on the ground and a non-driveable car. Would hate to think of the consequences if this happened at the track; like the end of one of the straights at Watkins Glen.

Removed the SS lines and installed new OE lines. Never had a brake line problem.

I'll add to this and say that I've "heard" that the ABS does not function as well with SS and your better staying with OEM rubber lines. YMHO.

Unless you're tracking the car in PCA/POC Club racing, SS lines are just another thing street cars really don't need, but they are cool looking, especially if you partially cover them with crab legs.

I know Steve Weiner used to recommend against SS brake lines. I would PM him and see what he thinks.

There are SS lines that are and are not DOT approved. Choose wisely. There are also reports of failures at the the ends ...few reports, granted. But ONE is enough to "hurt" you. I've heard that race teams use rubber for the simple reason that they can be visually inspected, and they'll be replaced at regular intervals anyway. You can't accurately ascertain whether a SS line is still ok simply because it is sheathed in braid. I have yet to feel any difference in pedal feel or track performance between SS and OEM. And finally, when was the last time you heard of an OE line (that was less than 20 years old) either degrading in performance or failing altogether? For me, never. For these reasons, I'd stick to OE rubber lines ...but that's just me

Honestly, I'd just replace them with OEM lines. Don't know if it's cheaper or not, but it offers me better peace of mind on a somewhat important safety component.
