I am by no means an expert as I'm still waiting delivery of my 993 C4. However, my buddy leant me a Porsche mag (can't remember the name) that tried to answer the very question of a 993 vs. an early 996. In summary:

- 996 if you want a comfortable daily driver
- 993 if you want a car that's not quite as comfy, with a few quirks, but instills the passion of driving.
- If it comes down to buying a low-end 996 vs a good quality 993, go with the 993.

Good luck...

I agree with DC from Cape Cod on the 993 values. Having kept an eye on the market, they seem to be holding steady.

Before buying mine last summer, I drove 4-5 964s, 4 993s & 1 996. I drove the 996 first, and I couldn't believe how disappointed I was. Too cushy and Lexus-like for my taste. If you want sport, but lower maintenance than the 80s cars, go for the 993. That is consistent with what the mechanics told me, maintenance-wise.

For me it was all about looks - I fell in love with the classic bug-eyed look as a youngster and that is what I had to have.
