Default Tips Rule?

Porsche advise that the Tip version of the forthcoming 997 Turbo will accelerate quicker than the 6 speed manual:

0-100km/h 3.7sec (Tip) and 3.9sec (man)
0-200km/h 12.2sec (Tip) and 12.8sec (man)

All the best,

Amazing how newer technology is making the tips quicker than the manuals. I test drove an Audi 3.2 A3 with DSG (direct shift gearbox) and I couldn't believe how fast it was. It was almost like a sequential gearbox where the revs pulled on every upshift. Like the 997 TT, the tip was quicker than the manual from 0-60 by .2-.3ths.

Got news for you guys, manual shifting is old school....
I don't think any one can shift faster than tipping a shift paddle or switch.
do they even manually shift F1 cars any more? I know the new drag cars use electronic shifting.
I suspect the manual will always be around.... because it's "cheap"

They must have a launch program built into the 997tip because it would be hard to outdo a basic side-stepping of the clutch at 4000rpm in the manual. As I recall, BMW's SMG transmission would record the number of launches performed and the clutch would be out of warranty after ten??

I thought that American drag racers/hot rodders have known this for years.

DSG is not the same as an automatic, it has a clutch (or does it have 2?). With true automatics (even "manually shifted" ones), the torque converter is the limiting factor. I wonder with drag cars if someone came up with a automatic-shifting manual that could handle all the torque if it would be faster than an automatic.

Anyway, interesting about the turbo, I didn't think it was getting DSG yet, and it doesn't sound right that the tip would be faster.

I find it hard to believe that a slushbox tip will be faster than the manual. DSG perhaps, but not the slushbox. Unless of course they played with the gear ratios to make sure the tip was faster.

According to this month's Car & Driver, the new 997TT is NOT getting the dual-clutch sequential gearbox right now. However, it IS expected to get it at some point. I've heard this elsewhere as well.

I'm sure that the racing pros that post in this forum will be able to beat the Tip dispite the numbers published by Porsche. My Heros! :swoon:

Wow, I didn't realize that was a controversial opinion. Man, you guys need to turn your sensitivity meter down a few notches.

IIRC, the magazines tested the old automatic 300ZX turbo and found it to be faster than the manual box, apparently due to gearing and turbo lag issues.
