Though, my fan seemed to shut off the second I took the key out. Is it supposed to stay on even with the key removed?

Perhaps it wasn't hot enough to need it. Or, there could be something wrong....

In addition to letting mine idle for 30s, I place a fan near the rear of the car and let it run for about 30 minutes to cool things off. It is on a timer. This help cools down the car as well as the garage.

Your engine compartment fan should function after the key is removed if the engine has reached normal operating temp or above. It will also shut off, then come back on as the engine reaches the trigger temp again. Makes for some fun at times with others who are passing by the car when it kicks on.

Wow - I read this post and saw a post from Ray Calvo and freaked out. Then I realized this was an OLD thread!

I noticed while I have both my 993 and my fathers 993 (I'm detailing it for him now that he's got a bad elbow), that his seems to operate the fan with the key out much more than mine. Is there a way to check if mine is even working properly? Perhaps a fuse is blown? I can't remember the last time I heard it come on when the car was off.....

I don't let mine sit and idle. In fact, when coming home, I turn it off before I'm all the way inside the garage - because the entire house sits above the garage and exhaust fumes can seep up.

My cooling fan has never come on (or stayed on) after turning off the engine.

Avoid reving the engine before shut down, let idle and clutch in.

Same here. I wonder what Ray is thinking up there with this rash of very old posts being dug up recently. RIP Ray.

So maybe I honored him by searching to find this thread first and bringing it up to the top with my question.

So, should my fan stay on after key removal? Is there a way to check if something is wrong?

You should be, he would've been proud as he was a big advocate of the "search". Aaannd he would let you know about it!

As far as the fan, as already explained, it should stay on only when the engine is hot enough so not always.

No kidding. How many times have we been at the track, beating the **** out of a mag case car........oil temp 250+ on a 105 degree day (or more when I was in Phoenix)........and there's kinda nothing you can do about it. Never had any longevity problems; the RS spec engine in my old car went 100-120K before I pulled it apart to freshen it and sell it to another guy.

In my best Ray Calvo...............its a car......turn the key to the off postion!!! open the door, and get out of the car........geeeeesh!!!!!!! These cars can be driven in the rain, snow, heat, etc.......the only thing wrong is the car owner that babies the car!!!!!!!!!!!!! hell maybe you should have a garage freezer, and back the car in!..my gawd...
