Default Any downside to a C4?

I wasn't looking for a C4 but found one that looks promising. Any downside to owning one? Do most people feel they are worth any substantial premium in price or ..... just not enough extra fun for the buck?

Thanks again for all the replies... I know the revolving door of newbie questions must get old. I moderate a similar list for motorcycles and see this everyday but seeing how exited people get makes it worth it.

Off of the top of my head...less trunk space, heavier, more complexity, different handling feel with arguably less steering liveliness.

I don't see any real downside to the C4. Some talk about less stearing feel. But I'll say go drive your daily driver and then take the C4 for a ride. Plenty of steering feel for me and you'll notice every transition strip and pavement change.

While the C4 was shipped to the states in lower levels than the C2, I don't see that they command a premium in price. I think it does make it a little better in bad weather and had a ball in the rain with mine the other day.

If it is a well maintained example I wouldn't have any quams about a C4. I was personally looking for a C2 when I ran into mine and bought it because it was well maintained, right color combo, and I knew a lot about the PO. Good luck with the hunt.

Good point Mark. Yes, the trunk is very small. When I was going over the car with my wife the first time she laughed when I showed her the trunk since I promised her we will be doing more vacations together now.

About 125 lbs or so heavier . . . myabe a smidge slower . . . but better handling potential . . . but nothing that can't be made up for with experience and some DE to learn to handle a rear engine car.

If the car is good then buy it. I went out open-minded and ended up with a C4. It was by far the best example mechanically and was in the colour I most liked so it made sense. No regrets over getting a C4 and it does feel more stable in the wet.

Cheers,

David

I acutally like the heavier steering wheel feel of my C4 compaired to the C2s I've driven.

I don't think the trunk is any smaller; it was in the 964 but the 993 is a totally different system. It's not a particularly complex system; it's a viscous coupler, a computer and front differential. You also get limited slip and ABD standard in the C4. It shares the beefier brake hydraulics with the Turbo, too.

When you are not in slippery conditions, 96 percent of the torque is going to the rear wheels, so it doesn't feel particularly different from a C2 (I have owned three C4's and three C2's and driven both extensively). In the rain or snow, the C4 feels incredibly planted. To me, it's well worth the $2-3k premium.

Having gone from a C2 to a C4, I definitely prefer the more planted feeling of the C4. And, according to the Owner's Manual and Adrian's book, C4s are faster 0-60 m.p.h.

Which is quicker (same driver) at an autocross or on a small race track (1.3 mile, 9 turns).

Are maintenance costs significantly more for a C4?

Thanks,

Joe

I'd be equally crap at either event and in either C2 or a C4 but I might stay on the track marginally longer in the C4!

I don't remeber being hit for any extra items in three years for the C4 though if the trans ever went at the front that could be painful!

Cheers,

David

Nope, you coule get a C4 narrow body coupe in 1995, or C4 narrow body cabs in any year. I believe that all 1996-1998 C4 coupes were widebody S models.
