I'll race you to the finish line! I have had my body work done and the car had a 30K service (twice ironically) so I'm ahead of you there. I have a new gearshift ****, seats, suspension, exhaust and the calipers to get done. Plus I'm adding ultrashield to the front and would like to get a new windshield (we'll see what Progressive says about that!). And oh yeah, thanks to you I'll have new HID lights to put in when I replace my headlight lenses!

Here is the progress so far. Keep up the good work and keep posting pictures!!

I have to get home early everyday(before the wife does) in order to hide my daily shipment of parts and receipts. Your car is looking awesome. Cool beans on the HID's with the new lenses it's gives the car a new look. Not that yours needs it. By the way are you running clear bulbs in your marking lamps or yellow? Hard to tell by pic, looks yellow.

That's a pretty decent comparison.

For those that want to get a better idea of the color of 6000 or greater HIDs, go look at your front marker lights (not headlights) and compare them to Dan's front marker lights--this will give you a baseline of the colors. Now, looking at Dan's HIDs, you can see they are much "whiter" than the marker lights. This is the effect you get with the 4300K systems.

Now, compare the bluish color of the higher Kelvin HIDs. This bluish will be even more pronounced next to your standard "yellowish" front marker lights.

This is not to say that 6000+K HIDs are bad, but you really need to know what you are going to end up with. If you want the bluish, that's great. However, if you want the whitish, get the 4300K.

In the air - Thanks for the post regarding HIDs.

I cant decide between 4300 and 6000k HID. Im currently using silverstars which are around 4000k (according to the mfg website) but they only put out 1400 lumens (900 on low beam).

My biggest concern is to improve visability over the silverstars. I alsways felt that lumination could be improved. A second less important factor is that I want a whiter, almost bluish tint to the lights.

Ill never forget when I saw a 993 96 turbo with HID for the first time. The white almost looked a little blue compared to std halogen.

Can you tell me if the 4300's 1) improve visability over halogens (or even silverstars) or 2) the 4300s look like OEM light?

The fact that 6000k are 20% lower lumen makes me think that the 4300k are the way to go. However, the silverstars are close to 4000k and I dont think they look like the litronic OEM (still too yellow).

Sorry for beating a dead horse!

First, I think 4300k is a little bit bluer than OEM xenon lights. I've owned both, and although I can't do a back-to-back comparo, I can say that I never thought my OEM xenons were blue, but I do think my current aftermarket 4300k have a blueish hue. Somebody else recently posted the same comment. OEM xenons are VERY white, not blue at all and not yellow either. I'd guess OEM xenon are 4000k or less.

Second, I'd be VERY surprised if Silver****s are truly 4000k. I bought them for my foglights and it was a total waste of money. Barely any whiter than std fog lights. Totally misrepresented. Very yellow.

Just spoke with Charles at Vertex and got on the list for the 4300K. He expects them in 2-3 weeks.

I guess you are correct - the OEM litronics were never a blue tint. I guess that was my impression back in 1996 - back then every car had standard halogen - puke yellow light - compared to the white light from the turbo!

Has anyone had any AM radio interference or other electrical gremlins once they converted to the HID? My concern is that the vertex or ebay HIDs are probably coming from the far east and may not have the isolation that an OEM system may have....

Maybe dumb questions... I haven't taken delivery of my 993 yet...
1) Is there any risk of overloading the stock wiring running these HIDS?
2) Is it possible for a bulb to damage the housing if it is too hot? eg. 6000K? 12000K?

Also, is there any other way to get in touch with Darryl? I've tried calling him several times today and the phone system keeps disconnecting on me.

Just call the main number, select 2 for sales and mention you want the Rennlist deal for the HID kit. I did that, and the sales guy put me through to Charles -- he told me I'm like the 8th guy on the waiting list for the 4300K kit.

0n a 1-10 scale the oem H1 halogens are a 5, Silverstars are a 6 & quality HID lights are a 10. The Silverstars are an improvement over regular halogens, but not by much, IMO. See my old H1 halogen - HID comparison photo below.

1) No, at least for the low beam. HID bulbs use 35W vs oem halogen's 55W. In high beam position, using the high beam flasher results in very high surges in a circuit (& switch) which may not be designed for those loads. For those running HID highs, time will tell.
2) The numbers refer to the Kelvin scale, an indication of color temp, not degrees F or C.
I've had aftermarket HID lighting for 5 years w/o any problems.
