Smile Solved annoying exhaust rattle!

Hi Everyone,

Finally traced my low speed exhaust rattle. It was driving me nuts as all the joints and box positioning were clear but I was getting this rattle coming through the bodywork. At first we thought it was box positioning, then we thought it was welds in the box itself, then we thought heat shields above the box (up in the wing) and finally I tracked it to a broken bumper support rod that was touching the exhaust heat shield.

Worth remembering if you get a rattle that appears to come through the bodywork.

Cheers,

David

David,
Can you post a pic of the rod or identify where it's located? I have an occasional rattle during spirited romps that I would like to track down.

Hi Andrreas,

Just knocked this up. The circle shows where the support bar (i've put red lines where it is) has been rubbing against the heat shield. The other photo shows where the bar had broken. It's hollow so for now I have put a section of rod inside the two bits and have forced them apart with a washer to make the barstick away from the heat shield. I'll have to replace the bar at some point but it can wait for now till it gets warmer!

Cheers,

David

I've got a similar rattle/resonance right at 2,900 RPM. I'm going to check this out today. Great work, David!

These support bars have rusted away from my rear bumper and was mentioned on my PPI (a common problem apparently). Anyone know a part number for these and a UK supplier as I want to replace them in the summer? I've done a search and can't find anything.

Hi Darren,

Have you got an OEM price as they probably won't cost too much?

Cheers,

David

Hi Darren,

I had mine replaced earlier this year when I had some paintwork done on my rear bumper. I'm pretty sure the guy said there are two hangers per side - just checked the bill and it shows 2 @ £19 and 2 @ £56 (from OPC). The paintshop does lots of Porsche work (including work for Porsche UK as his premises are right behind the UK HQ) - and the owner told me this is a common problem. They catch all the water and crap thrown up by the back wheels, which is then incubated by the heat from the silencers to accelerate the rusting process.

Ah, those words again! It never ceases to amaze and disappoint me how many "common problems" there are with our beloved 993s.

Hi Eric,

I used to get some resonance from the back end, but the new hangers fixed it.

Take care,

Steve.

Thanks Steve, there are two hangers, the one I've shown plus one next to wheelarch which seems to be in much better condition.

Cheers.

David
