Default Tapping noise and Oil Weight

Noticed a distinct tapping noise in the pass side when I hold the throttle at 3000 rpm. This only happens when the engine is WARM. It almost sounded like pinging, but it is not. Took the car to the local shop today and he told me that the Dealer normally uses "0" weight oil and that I should be using something heavier. The dealer just did a 30k.

My thought was lifetrs, but he ruled that out. He said that his suspicions are the wrong oil weight from what he thought was "right" becasue the tapping is most prevalent when the engine is warm.

There is no noticable tapping noise at idle.

Bringing car in tomorrow to have existing oil drained and re-filled with heavier oil weight per his recommendation.

This sound right to you?

I have read thru all the posts regarding valve noise and oil weights, but didnt see anyting on noise when the engine is WARM. I also noted a post that sounded identical to my problem with no resolution.....

No This doesn't sound right at all
"0" weight refers to cold viscosity, not warm viscosity

What was the other number for the oil used?

He didnt say what weight he would be putting in the car, nor the other number for the oil that the dealer uses.

Its just strange that the noise is only there when the car is warm, not cold as you always read about.

It very well could be the lifters Rob. If the oil thins to a point that gets by a weak or bad lifter O-ring, then it probably isn't holding enough pressure to keep the lifter fully extended and clickity clack they go. Remember, oil looses viscosity to some degree and thins when warm/hot. Steve W recommends 20W50, and considering you, like me are in very warm climate areas, I would go that route if I were you.

Just had a long talk with Steve (he should have a 900 number)...and he recc. heavier than the 0 weight oil the dealer just put in. I'll tell you what, you have to hand it to Steve-what a guy to give input for nothing. No affiliation, blah blah blah.

Now Chris, shouldnt you have a TIG welder in hand right now...;-)

The only true zero weight oil Porsche ever used was in the GT1 cars (circa 96-97) in qualifying trim. For the warm climate I live in, 20-50 seems to work fine.

I missed that one When I go downstairs and ask our Fab shop manager if I can weld something, he usually says not until the next shipment of grinding disks arrive

I can weld, but it usually requires grinding afterwards

Look, Chris thinks he lives in a warm climate
Come try the southeast coast......you don't know what warm is until you experience the oppressive heat/humidity of the southern states

BTW, he meant me Chris. I'm making him a set of these

993inNC, you're making him a set of cat bypass pipes? Those look awesome - How do yours compare to the fabspeed units? Power? Sound? More or less expensive? (wiping drool off my keyboard)

Mine was ticking - progressively louder - at any temp. before my valve guides were replaced. It was initially believed that one of my hydraulic lifters was bad so I had all replaced. It was like a Timex - took a fixin' and kept on tickin'!

By the way - this all took place two weeks after buying my first Porsche. 3k miles later and running like a champ!

If you want to better fabspeed could you not get both loops dropping down to get extra "cooling".... ;-)
