Should I run?
At $25,000 it may be a good buy......I have had three Porsches with Tiptronic and they were fine for everyday driving.......Review the service records, talk to the two former owners....then decide whether to pursue, PPI, et.al.
Really guys until you see it and drive, our humble opinions are worthless

And don't be frightened off by the "TIP" aspect. I have had my tip for a little more than a year and is my first tip p-car. Once you learn the gearbox it is absolutely awesome to drive. The nice thing about it is if you get a phone call or just want to sit back and cruise with the little lady then you throw it into auto mode and relax. When you want to get on it you put it in manual and go for it.
It really is the best of both worlds and all the people that complain about the tip I would bet never actually drove one.
And for those hard core racers...I thought there was a thread a while back about a guy that Whooped everyone on the track with a tip

You can't over-rev a TIP either!
Really, I love mine... Cruiser or Bruiser... you get the best of both worlds... and if you drive in heavy traffic the auto box is great.
Don't be put off by the tip bashers, they really are "bulletproof" transmissions.

My experience with tip is my wife's 535i which I love bombing around in. I've found though that I used the tip selection once and promptly forgot about it as the sports auto mode is so easy - just like Gran Tourismo!
Wow!
So much passion over a transmission... Having a tip wouldn't bother me if it meant the wife had one less thing to complain about. She needs to be able to move it when I deploy. I have driven several and know the six speed is very nice. I just sold the five speed in my avatar that was no dog by any means. I have and always will love the 911... in all its variants. A nice 964 or 993 tip would suit me just fine. An 80s 911 is a classic nobody can go wrong with either, although I'm sure I'd still long for the 993!
Two smilie limit reached,

gettin' kinda sick of the tip -vs- manual flamings.
doug do what ever ya gotta' do to get into a 993. you know your situation... though tips sold for more from the factory, you may be able to get a nice deal on one used. the tip is faster 0-60 in manual-mode (not that it even matters) also when you learn to drive in "manual" (i prefer to drive 'em that way even in traffic). you'd be surprised what one can do w/ it. just wish the 993's had an extra gear in there is my only complaint.
i'll always remember what haywood reported re: tiptronic... (this is not the exact quote i was lookin' for but it'll do) just one of quite a few.
fwiw: this is from "canadian driver" (note: this is re: a turbo in 2001)
"After driving the Turbo with a manual transmission, I stepped into the Turbo with the Tiptronic. Personally, I prefer a traditional manual transmission in a car like this, but the new Tiptronic S in the Turbo has made believers out of many who have driven it, including Hurley Haywood who said he preferred the Tiptronic to the manual transmission".
doug bol w/ the search. imho i'd look for a clean (fairly lower mi. 993). if you do go for a 'my96' or later the varioram is very nice. maybe even lean toward getting a p-car that's already had the infamous "valve guide job" done............... then it's no worries for you. note: from what i know (correct me if i'm wrong guys?), all 993's have the secondary air-injection probs 'my95' included. later models just detect it w/ the cel light b/c it's obdII rather than obdI. in my case i picked up a low mile one that came w/ a thrid party extended warranty (that's been used once so far).
just my 2¢

"The manual gear shifter was easy to shift but felt a bit floppy. Double-clutching or heel-and-toeing are not needed to shift down into a lower gear - "double-clutching is for truck drivers" said Hurley - the six-speed's syncromesh operation is smooth enough to handle quick shifts and sudden engine loads.

you are right luis. fair point.
my point, still a tip.
the later tips have more mapping programs earliest versions had 10 , the latest (i believe) have something like 150 mapping programs - which (from what i know) does enable one to adapt to many more driving conditions easily.
i've noticed w/ my tip, i need to drive @ higher rpms for an hour or so, if i plan on driving (lets say) a spirited canyon run b/c the 993 will not allow me to shift @ the higher rpms that i prefer (right away)... w/ the new ones this is not a prob. ----> & fwiw: not really a prob for me in the 993.
... goin for a drive right now to get some donuts. need to re-map

While ya'll are visiting the now worn out Tip vs. 6 speed tranny debate, I went out to the garage took my 993 (TIP) for a run out through a National Forest and dogged it through numerous staright aways and turns. I came back laughing.
All 993's in whatever condition, with whatever transmition or mods are fun to drive, own and play with. End of story.
