I was going through my car stuff today and came across an old email about the airbag options. This was biased to 964s but you could check for the 993.

I used part 928.612.220.00 to disable both airbags which is not an option for a 993. However, there is a part 000.721.951.60 that appears to disable only the drivers airbag. You might do a search on that part number and see if it turns up any more info.

I got my new wheel in the other day, and my elect engineer neighbor dropped off a few 1W 1ohm resistors to me the other day. I'll be at the track this weekend coming up, but after I get back I'm going to attempt to fool the airbag sensor by putting the resistors in series.....we'll see.

So you're going to use 3 ohms total? Isn't that a bit high considering what others have been using? I thought the number was like 2.8 ohms. Somebody used two 5.6 ohms in parallel to get 2.8 ohms.

So you guys aren't afraid of ditching the airbag for a momo? Are you using your cars on the street? Have you looked into the insurance rate implications of removing the airbag?

By the way, I was very close to replacing my 996 3 spoke with a momo a few months ago, but someone told me my insurance rates would be affected. I called my insurance co. and asked, and they were right! Big difference in my case, so I decided to keep the airbag wheel. Now I'm starting to think about installing a momo anyway, it makes for a much nicer driving experience imo. Some people on this forum have called ditching the airbag "foolish" or "crazy," but that's ridiculous - does that mean anyone driving a pre-airbag car is foolish or crazy? Besides, these cars are 10 years old now, I think airbag systems are not designed to last more than 10 or 15 yrs anyway...

Oh by the way, anyone care to post some pics of your new Momos? There aren't many pics of Momo wheels in 993s, except for the GT2 motorsports wheel. I'd like to see a Corse, or Monte Carlo, etc... Thanks!!

Well in theory yes, but the resistors run a variance of up to 5%, so we're talking 2.85 (optimum is suposed to be 2.9 ohm) to 3.15. I'm going to attempt to measure the airbags resistance before proceeding, but my engineer neighbor (who also happens to work for a company that creates computer modules for auto and marine industry) thought that it should work fine (no guarantees of course). We'll see

Guys, I wanted to bing up his thread to see how things worked out.

Chris, what resistor did you end up using? Any issues? Did you use a 7004 hub?

I'm being offered a nice Momo Monte Carlo with a 231 hub and I'm trying to figure out if it'd fit or if 7004 hub is needed. The airbag and horn issues are also on my mind.

Never got the airbag or the horn issues worked out. The resistors didn't work for me. And now I am waiting for this box to be developed and built through Chris W so I can turn off the bag light that came on from installing the momo. But I do love the momo with quick disconnect, sorry not sure off hand which hub.....it fit whatever it is

The Momo 7004 hub is the correct one for 964's and 993's.

Chris, which resistors did you try to use? 2.9? 2.7? 3 Ohm?

Jack, the wheel I was offered was on '83 911 before with a 231 hub. I think it means that it shoul fit a 964 and 993 as well?

Mike,

Nope, the 231 adapter won't work on a 964/993...I believe it fits a '74-89. The Momo 7004 is the one you need. Any non-OEM Momo wheel will fit any Momo hub.

You'll also need the horn adapter (available from the dealer, and not expensive) that is mentioned earlier in this thread. The airbag resistor seems to be the tricky part. For a 964 you can buy a plug-in device that disables both front airbags. It has a "928" part number, but I don't recall the exact number at the moment. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on the 993, which is why I still have my unattractive 4-spoke airbag wheel instead of the RS wheel that I really want.

Unfortunately, none of the non-airbag installation threads have addressed the "2.8 ohm resistor install" in enough detail for those of us who are electronically challenged. A picture of the resistor mod sure would be nice!

Actually, looking at most Momo applications, it appears that 231 should work, like here: http://ltbmotorsports.com/hubkit.html

Although I've heard some very conflicting info on this and know that 7004 does work.

As far as the airbag light, I'm thinking of that $30 gizmo from airbagoff.com More expensive than just a resistor, but hey, people have said that it definitely turns the light off. Although I might experiment. Now, to find time for all this...

Trying to fool my airbag system as well - after reading all the information on the forums. I used a 2.7 1/4w resistor. For the passenger side - I had a spare airbag connector hanging around - so I just soldered a resistor on and taped it up with electrical tape. For the drivers side, I bent the wire ends to fit into the airbag plug. Took the car to the garage to have the light reset - but it didn't work. Dam ! If it had worked I would have posted pictures for you boys.

Will do some more research and report back when I get it working. But if someone can confirm that it works and has pics - please post.
