when you guys hook up battery tender do you need to disconnect battery cables so not to damage any electrical components ( alt etc).

I have a Hella female plug under the car, just bellow the spare tire...works well, to disconnect just step on the cable.
Did the same on my Harley and the BMW bike has it from factory...its their standard.
You dont need to disconnect the Battery, remember if its dead you will need more than a battery tender.
If you are interested to do the above mod PM me or I can post.

Just made a post with all info, its nearly invisible when looking at the car and since its facing down will not keep dirt but it has a cover.

Battery tender I assume you are referring to a battery maintainer to keep the battery fresh while the car is parked?

Walmart sells a fairly affordable unit for around $25, it comes with both the aligator clip and hardwire mount to connect to the battery. With the harwire mount you just connect the wires directly to the battery terminal and leave the car's battery cable connect it as it is. There is a quick connect that you can plug in and out.

So just matter of popping the front hood and connect the battery maintainer whenever you park you car. Make sure you push in the front hood latch in as it will leave the front hood light on. Just pull the front hood release again when you are ready to drive next time to close the hood.

Some of the big catalog guys sell one from Porsche that simply plugs into the lighter. It costs a bit more (around $70 IIRC), but it sure is easy to use.

To answer your questions which I asked while I was researching the battery tenders - I've been using these for years on my 993 as well as on my motorcycles. No, no need to disconnect any cables to protect the electrical systems.

What a timely thread! Santa was kind enough to bring a Porsche battery charger/maintainer for Christmas, as the P-car's battery has been acting a bit suspect of late.

So I take the 993 out for a run but need to make a stop on the way. When I get back in the car, the key does nothing . The starter would turn the engine ever so slightly, but not for a complete revolution (it started fine initially, slow, but it started). Unfortunately, I parked in such a fashion that a curb prevented me from getting a rolling start and performing a good ol' push start. A quick call to a friend with a truck, detach the rear license plate, thread the tow 'eye' into the bumper, and the car was pulled to where I could point it downhill. A few seconds later, the beast roared to life - hopefully my clutch will forgive the momentary abuse...

Once everything was sorted, I took it for a proper romp and then attached the charger/maintainer. The unit indicated that it was charging so I'll see how the battery behaves in a few days.

I have a $40 Sears maintainer for the last couple years and it has worked well. I use a lighted plug that fits the cigarette lighter. The light is a reminder that the plug has power. I would suggest adding a quick disconnect to the lead running from the car to the charger outside the car. When you drive away with the lighted charger plug still attached, you will thank me.

I found the lighted plug head at Radio Shack. I preserved the quick connect that came with the charger but RS sells these as well.

I just soldered on the RS lead.

Gratuitous lift shot.

One other note - I glued the 6V - 12V switch to the 12V side. Once, the dog must have been fooling with it and left it in the 6V position.

I have the Eagle scissor lift http://eagleequip.com/page/EE/PROD/LI-LM/602-002

I have 10 foot 2X12s that I use as a ramp to clear the lift.

The lift is shown in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ght=eagle+lift

I have the lift for general maintenance. I try to do all my own maintenance. I have completed many of the DIY procedures on Robin's site: http://www.p-car.com/

It is currently on the lift because I was detailing the car. It is a lot easier waxing at a comfortable height. I will store the car on the lift for the winter because it is so convenient and it should avoid flat spotting the tires.

But, isn't that bad for the suspension?

"Battery Tender" is actually the trademark/tradename of the company and/or its product. (Kiind of like calling all facial tissues Kleenex).

Anyway, I bought mine from Nate during the group buy about a month ago. I got it shipped for $50 and it appears to be doing a better than the Porsche Maintainer I have.
