Default Worth upgrade from 5sp to 6sp?

Dear All,

As some of you might already know that I have converted my 94 euro version 993 from tiptronic to manuel, but with a Euro 5sp box from a 93 964. Now there is a G50/20 US version box avalible. Unfortunately I do not have the data of my current box so need to ask some of you how does my current box compare to the G50/20 gear ratio, is it worthwhile for me to change it over?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Short answer, no. Certainly not a US box. I swapped my US G50/20 for a ROW G50/21. I don't have the ratios for your box but if it's ROW I'd never swap for a 6spd US box, almost never use 6th gear unless you are really cruising looking for MPG.

Cheers,
Andy

The gear ratios for the Euro 964 G50/03 and the US 964 G50/05 are identical; 1st 3.50, 2nd 2.059, 3rd 1.407, 4th 1.086, 5th 0.868. The difference lies in the final drive ratio, which is 3.444 in the Euro G50/03, and 3.333 in the US G50/05.

The US 993 G50-/20 ratios are; 1st 3.818, 2nd 2.048, 3rd 1.407, 4th 1.118, 5th 0.921 and 6th 0.775. The final drive ratio is 3.444.

The Euro 993 G50/21 ratios are; 1st 3.818, 2nd 2.150, 3rd 1.560, 4th 1.242, 5th 1.027, 6th 0.820.
The final drive is 3.444.

If I interpret the ratio correctly it seems improvement will be minimal even if I switch to a G50/21, let alone G50/20. Apparently 6sp will not be utilize at all. Total regearing will be too expensive. And to but a G50/20 and change to a different rack and pinion will be out of my budget also..... May be a light weight flywheel is more worthwhile in my case?

The data above is sufficient for your decision ... all I can add is the only time I ever use 6th gear is on a long freeway downhill to conserve fuel, or occassionally at very high speeds.

i never use 6th gear. 80 mph in 5th is about 3500 rpm, and i try to keep it at, or under, 80. not shifting into 6th is my way of trying to keep tickets down.

I did the flywheel on mine at the same time I did the tranny swap, well worth IMHO. Do that one first. I used the RS flywheel which is the 964 part number I believe.

Thank you so much for the advises. Its just too easy to fall into one of those senseless purchases. But for my car the best mod so far is the PSS9 and the tip to manuel convertion. What a difference. Now will study more about the LWF option see if that make a dramatic improvement.

If you really want a big improvement, having the G50 6speed customized with your own ratios would be a big benefit. The stock 5th gear can be moved to 6th gear with a bit of machining and then you can choose custom ratios for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Then you'd have 6 closer ratios spread over the range of the original 5. Steve at Rennsport made an estimate and chart for me once. I'm sure it would be great, but requires a considerable financial investment.
