Guys,

Take it easy...no need to get all excited here. I wasn't slamming the C4. I am sorry you misread my post. Yes, the C2 it is a "tad" ligher (30 Kg or 70 pounds to be exact). An yes, less friction due to less movable parts, translates to more Hp to the wheels, translates to better acceleration...sorry.

I think C4's are great, I just didn't justify having the extra weight, complexity, etc of AWD for a fair weather fun weekend car. My daily driver is an Audi A4 with Quattro and I love the way it handles with AWD. The other option I had with the A4 was FWD...now that really sucks!

Thank God Porsche made these great cars both AWD and RWD, so we all can have a choice on which one we want to enjoy.

Peace!

If and when I get the chance, I'm going to go AWD. For me, its the extra insurance of not getting stuck in inclement weather plus a greater sense of security under "normal" conditions.

I suppose no 911 is completely idiot-proof, but my understanding is the AWD ones are better at saving your tail than the RWD cars. That's FAR more important to me than max performance.

Man, when I was looking for a 993, I couldn't care less if it was a C2 or C4.
If and when I get another, I will not care less if it is a C2 or C4.

I've driven both (on dry roads) and the differences are almost transparent.

Whats the reason they made the twin turbos all wheel drive?

So they won't swap ends as easily?
Seriously (IMHO), it was to provide a more sure footed platform for 400+ HP.

They are intended for a different market/customer.

ive had a c2 and now have a 993tt (awd).

i think the c2 is better than a c4 b/c it is more fun - not b/c it is 2% faster or whatever. Unless u really need the awd for bad weather, the c2 feels lighter and the nose turns in better. It feels like a gokart with no weight in the front. For street driving the c2 is more engaging. My TT is boring on the street b/c it has sooo much grip and feels a bit heavy , it isnt fun unless im at crazy speeds.

here is an exercpt from the "911 & Porsche World" January 2004 article about the 993:

[The Carrera 4] featured an entirely new transmission system and Automatic Brake Differential (ABD). The latter transfers torque to the front wheels if the rears spin and can apply braking to the individual rear wheels if one starts to slip. This torque control gives the 993 Carrera 4 a 0.1 second advantage over the Carrera 2 in the sprint from standstill to 100km/h"

inspite of the additional weight, the c4 is faster in a sprint. sorry...

After owning both a 993 C4 and a 993 C2, I agree with Cabrio993; if you're expecting only good-weather driving, I'd stick with a C2. I find the 110lb difference to be noticeable. My overall conclusion is that the 993 awd system is basically a foul-weather system. It doesn't do anything unless the rear wheels start slipping, then it kicks in. So for fair weather driving, the extra weight is of little use. Now, if you had 400hp, the awd would be useful for getting that power down without losing traction.

That said, the extra margin of safety (mostly in rain & snow) is comforting. You really can't go wrong with either choice, but for YOUR intended use, you'd probably be happier with a C2. If I were buying a daily driver for chicago, i'd definitely get a C4.

I've heard it argued both ways, I think. But in the end, the engine-to-engine power variations are WAY more relevant than the C2 v. C4 issue. It's not uncommon to see a 30hp difference from one car to another, yet nobody is sure why. That's way more relevant than C2 or C4.
