Did Porsche introduce transponder keys on the 993? Transponder key is the technology in which a chip in the key must authenticate with the engine control computer before the car will start. In other words, even if the key could enter and physically turn the ignition switch, the car would not start unless the engine computer read and accepted the code from the chip.
I'm trying to establish what model years had remote-entry capabilities in the key BEFORE the transponder functionality was added. Probably happened sometime in the 993 model years; I suspect the 996 was introduced with transponder.
Thanks!

"I suspect the 996 was introduced with transponder."
That's correct, also the 986 Boxster. It has a true immobilizer which
is unique to each car's VIN, utilizing a RFID key type transponder.

Correct. You do need the immobilizer portion of the keyfob though.

I opened the door with the key and the alarm went off until I pressed the remote on my 993tt.
If you don't turn the car on after some time of unlocking the car, you have to press the remote button again to start it.
I wish they had the key with the buttons on it like my wife's HONDA. It also has the imobolizer chip in the key.
I believe the 997's now have it that way. Don't have to carry a remote and a key.

"I have a remote with a transponder on my MY96" - JChiles -
Remember. the 993 cars do NOT have a transponder as do the 996s.
The drive block system of the 993 functions basically as does an after-market
alarm system, i.e. a RF signal via a remote prevents the car from starting
but does NOT prevent a fairly easy bypass of the system.
