Default Battery Question

Every winter my '96 targa goes into hibernation in my garage. In order to prolong the life of my battery, I usually connect some type of of battery maintainer. This year, is like every year in the past, regardless of whether or not I do this, my battery ends up dead. I've changed battery maintainers, (buying a good quality one), but to no avail. I hear strange "clicking" sound...(like a clock ticking), coming from the passenger side foot well, when I have it plugged in. Is this normal? The battery, itself, is dead. It seems that if I don't connect some type of device, my battery slowly loses a charge, but doesn't go completely dead. Only when I connect the "charger" does the battery seem to go bad. I've double-checked the polarity and all seems correct. Could this be something related to the Drive Block security system? Also, what is this "clicking" sound? My battery is less than a year old and it seems like every year I have to buy another one. What is causing this problem? The "charger, maintainer" I bought says that it has circuitry that will not allow overcharging. What am I missing here?

For long hibernations, maybe its best to disconnect the battery. Sounds as though your maintainer is not keeping up with the drain? May want to verify current drain?

Definitely sounds like you have a big drain somewhere. Never heard any "clicking sound" with mine. One year on a battery is not good. My current Interstate battery, always on a maintainer if parked for more than 3-4 days anytime of year, will be six years old next month....still going strong.

If you have a good battery and no unusual drain on it, a good maintainer will take care of long hybernations.
