This same advice giver also suggested using the seach function first... remember.

Not trying to be a d#ck, but you will actually get a lot more out of seaching than you will from this post.

Good Luck Again

OK, here is my advice...get a 993...for all the reasons you asked about plus a bunch more like "holds value". Over and out.

one, do a search.
two, i have had both, here is my B/S.

prob on 993, squeaky windshield, premature valve guide wear, CEL (except 1995), leaky steering rack.

prob on 996, RMS, pourous block (usually warraty would have taken care of it by now), wet sump (though this is NOT a problem. you have to be keven buckler to get oil starvation on these cars).

appearance, fit and finish quality: 993 wins hands donw.

handling: stock to stock 996 wins, no matter what ppl say. 996 has better chassis.

there are many other issues that i am forgetting. if you be more specific, i will try to respond.

Test drive both and ask your heart...the 993 will hold value a way better due to an already "classic" (or neo-classic) status...

They are completely two different cars. Drive them for at least an hour each then get a PPI done, then buy the one that's painted your favorite color. Chris

They are two different cars. Drive them both and follow your heart. I bought a 993 for the looks, heritage, craftsmanship. Everything else was secondary. However, I will admit that the 996 is a better car in most other respects.

As Greg H. stated " the 996 is a better car in most other respects" but the 993 has what other P cars (996, Boxter, Cayman) don't have......the true Porsche 911 mystique in it's finest version.

You should buy what you like best but I'll bet you end up with a 993

Do you really want a car that, from the front looks (and shares most if not all of its parts from the doors forward) like it's cheaper (and probably better handeling) sibling Boxster? Or do you want to own the last of the true 911, the last of the best. The best before Porsche became the corporate money **** that every other car company becomes when they begin to really make money and figure out what component sharing really means to the bottom line. Go get yourself a big 'ol fat ***'d 993 and revel in the amount of time your teeth see the light of day before, during and after driving it

A 1999 996 is the first model year for the type and, IMHO and many others', the worst of the first generation water-cooled 911's. Lest you forget, it has a 3.4 liter motor, not the larger engine of later years. And not only does it look like a freakin' Boxster from the front, it has all of the curves of a handheld calculator.

Agree with all of the above. Here is my 2 bits worth. The '99 C4 996 was a great drive, safe, easy but just not the involving drive you expect from your 1st P car. 993 C2 as the last of the semi-hand assembled and air-cooled line has the classic looks, status and occasional white-knuckle moments that, IMHO, I expect from a P car.
If this is your 1st Porsche either will give you a lift that others don't!
