Go get yourself a big 'ol fat ***'d 993 and revel in the amount of time your teeth see the light of day before, during and after driving it

I have owned 993 (for sale), 996 (sold) and 997 (sold). The 993 is far more desireable in my opinion than the 996. The 996 is a more comfortable daily driver (more refined).
The 997 is in a class all by itself.

996 is like a lexus ...
soft, gentle, great car of course ... perhaps even better than a 993 !!!
BUT ... 993 is funny, great sound, semi hand-made, raw, GREAT looking, and
with origina porsche heritage. The ultimate air cooled machine .. !!
also, great value.

The water cooled p-cars are really nice modern cars. They drive great and are great everyday performance cars on the interstate, full of luxury comforts and electronic aids. THe 993 is an air cooled, gutsy, german sports car for special ocassions and special roads. I think 993 owners love the visceral, somewhat primitive quality of their drives.
I'm lucky enough to have both kinds. And nothing is better than a sunny fall saturday drive in the 993. Marc

I fought with this as well, I am not as bias as some on rennlist, But i will give you a honest evaluation of both cars according to me. , When i was looking I tried to find a balance of a sports car, and a good daily driver. The 993 I have to say one of the best looking Porsches ever made.....Hands down, hard to find the right combo if your picky like me.I loved the ext of the 993 but the interior was the same since like what 1969? just kidding. I was using the car as a daily driver so yes i wanted the creature comforts and the 996 had those if that doesn't make it a true porsche well as i said i am not as biased as some.I looked for 6 months trying to find the perfect car for me, as it turned out it just wasn't one out there, so what i did was order a new 996 with the options i wanted. Do i regret going to a 996 never, do I regret not having the 993 , honestly a little but they are BOTH great cars and are 2 different cars, you need to spend some seat time in both to see which is the right one for you.. All cars are going to take a hit on their value, yes the 993 WAS holding it better then the 996 , but the key word is WAS, they are dropping like stones as well now, thank the 997 for that! so in closing buy what ever the hell you like and who cares what we on the board say. 993 owners will tell you the 993 and 996 guys will tell you 996...If you can swing it get the 997 remember ever Porsche is better the the model before Porsche does not go backwards

I looked at 996s -- test drove a 996 -- 996 is a very easy car to like: smooth, modern, fast!
Now, every time I see a 996, it's always the same reaction: thank GOD I didn't buy a 996!

if it helps, here is my 2 cents worth...I had a 996, got bored after 10 months and 20k miles and out it went! Nice daily car but just did not feel special enough for when I really wanted the thrill of fast street driving. I was also not happy about its lack of identity when a Boxster showed up.
Anyway, now have a 993 and funny enough I hardly drive it - work keeps me away from home alot - however whenever I get to drive it, BOY!, is it just that little bit more fun compared to the 996.
So I guess, and as many have intimated, IF you are looking for a daily GT - the 996 fits perfectly well and prices now makes them an attractive buy even if they are as common as, say, a Ford (respect to Ford owners, but you get my drift!!!).
However if you want something that would last, is reliable, more fun to drive hard and has character then it will take alot to better the 993.
As for the 997, I like it too BUT for me a sports car is one which you can get in, turn the key and have fun. I am not too sure about gizmos like SatNav, PASM, PSM etc - I have reservation about who is truely driving the car - me or the on-board electonics.
Try a 993 C2, it is fun with a cap F.

No stone 993s dropping around here either. And, the local highline used dealers love to find good 993s...if they sit a month or so, they don't need to worry about price drops.
I do see a natural (with aging) increase in the number of very high mileage cars, or cars with "stories", poor damage repairs etc. These cars are establishing a lower bottom end on the pricing range, but the high end quality 993s are relatively stable.

Before the 997 was out, I will agree the 993 was holding its value very good. Just look on the autotrader you will see that you can buy a 993 cheaper then one year ago, as i said this board is very very bias, and i did not expect anyone to admit that their car was falling in value. And yes I know the 996 also took a hugh hit, more so then the 993, But be honest the 996 was the most sold Porsche EVER made, and the resale will be worse. There is a reason why the 996 sold more then the 993. Just be clear I love the 993 and i am not bashing it I could never talk bad about a awsome car like the 993....but some of you take it too personal
