I take it then no one will be switching to 0w40 from their favorite weight?

I think the issue here is not syntheic vs. dino or Mobit 1 vs. brand X. It is the weight of the oil.

I think the big unknown here is, will 0w40 be too thin for high mileage 911s... my guess is, a 75k mile engine accustomed to 15-50 will burn more oil with 0-40. Besides, I would think that older engines weren't designed to tolerances as tight as the engines of today.

Maybe PAG and the dealers figure they can get more old pcar owners to rebuild their engines (i.e. sell more parts, more business, etc) if we all suddenly have oil consumption nearing the limits of what our owner's manual says is "acceptable."

I don't know what their motive is, but I DO know that the great engineers that built our old 911s knew what they were doing. I'd trust my gut instint more than some new PAG memo.

when I bought my car last year......wow its finally been a year, I put 15W30 synth in it because I didn't know what the PO had used (he didn't really know either....?)and I thought it would be a great way to really clean out the motor. I got at least 3000-3500 miles without a top off. When the warmer weather came, I put 15W50 M.1 in and my consumption went up to 1500 miles at best before I needed a top off. My motor had 93K and now has 103K. Aside from the consumtion issue, I don't remember having any excessive lifter noises or anything, so I'm not sure what weight is right. I feel better in the summer using the thicker just from a pure heat transfer and thinning viscocity standpoint. In the winter, my temps never even get to the 8 O'clock position, so I would think the thinner should be just fine. My consumtion has since seemed to level off at the 2K mark (give or take) w/15W50, so I may just leave it in this winter to see what happens.

I got my '97 C2 back in May and did my first oil change shortly after (DIY) at 67500 miles using 0w-40. My previous cars were a '77 2.7 and '87 3.2, which I always ran 15w-50 in. I have no idea what the PO ran in the 993, but I do know it was only serviced by the dealer, so I'm guessing they used the suggested 0w-40.
Since then I've burned about 1qt per 2500 miles over the summer. At the beginning of October, I did my first track event and had 5 20-minute runs (1hr, 40min total). Temp stayed between 8 and 9 o'clock, and I saw no appreciable old drop at the end of the day, with 71k miles now on the clock.

I ran across this link when I was looking up some info regarding an oil change on my STI. Article is long, but interesting.

I believe I have used both 15W50 & 0W40 and have had no issues on either of my 993's.

15W/50W year round. The car is driven on sunny days in the winter, and kept in a heated garage (approx 50 degrees).

Great (and long) article. I found it interesting - almost amazing - the mileage increase he got on his Lincoln by running lighter oil, 10W40 IIRC. I've heard these claims before but never really thought a lighter weight oil could give such a huge return - almost 50% in his case. What does everyone else think?

I don't know what to think, but I'm pretty sure anyone who tells me I can go 15K between oil changes is not to be trusted on this subject.
