Kern County and speeding tickets
My Dad heard the Chief of the CHP speak this week and he said the worst place to get a speeding ticket is in Kern County. And that the average ticket costs $1,500.
Is this guy blowing smoke or is it true. :

I live in Kern County and I got a ticket last year for doing 85 in a 70. It was a little under $300. Maybe he meant that the highest ticket was $1500. People probably tend to speed more in Kern County because it includes a lot of rural areas, like the 5 and 99 from the grapevine north and through Tehachapi and Isabella. It also includes the 14 and 58 through Mojave and 395. A lot of people probably speeding on their way to Vegas, Mammoth, SF, etc etc. I have 3 V1s.....

I drive up and down California a lot for my job. There is a sign on the side of Hwy 5 as you head south that lists the number of driver's licenses revoked or suspended (they use the word "taken") on the sign. For rural counties such as Kern, traffic citations are a major source of revenue. The "fines" in California are made up of the state fine for the violations, and then a whole lot of fees, which are tacked on to supposedly cover the adminstrative costs of processing the ticket. You would be amazed at how fast these can add up. Court fees of $175, county facilities fees if $50, etc. $300 for a speeding ticket is about average.
So the question remains, do you watch the rearview mirror or the speedometer? On certai stretchs of highway across the desert, it really is hard to keep it under 85. Speed is so effortless in these cars.
