Default Speaker sizes

I have done some searches but couldn t find the exact answer.
What size speakers fit in the door openings? 5.25 or 6.5?
I am removing the HIFI box and using the existing speaker holes in the doors.
Appreciate the help.

Touf:

I am doing the exact same research since my wife just got me a new head unit for the 993 and I want to upgrade the speakers at the same time. The door speakers are 5.25" with a separate .75" tweeter. I got this info from a search here on Rennlist.

Lots of choices for speakers out there. So far, I have narrowed my choices down to JL Audio, MB Quart(pricey) and Boston Acoustics. I had the BAs in my 928 and they sounded awesome.

Good luck
Michael

I just replaced my door speakers with JL 5.25 coaxials for around $100.00. The benefit was much better sound & being able to retain the original grills for that factory "not worth stealing" look.....

I was able to fit 6.5 inch drivers in the existing holes of the door panels without any modification.

There are many here who have also installed similiarly sized speakers. I installed Alpine components (SPX-177a) with the crossover hiding in the door panel pocket.

Good luck!

Thank You Travis, those were the exact same speakers I had in mind.
The driver is a bit smaller than 6.5 so I was told it would fit and I wanted to confirm.

The speakers sound great! The crossovers are unfortunately not easy to conceal. They ate up the entire door pocket.

I mounted the tweeter above the woofer as I was not able to install into the factory tweeter pod. Credit to Rod Birch for his excellent examples of installs.

Sounds much clearer and not nearly as muffled as the so called, 'Hi-Fi' system. Bass response is decent. A sub would be ideal to add, but I'm not going that route.

Let me know if you need any pics or info.

BR,

I'm at work now, so I'll take some pics tomorrow am and upload to RL. If you already have your speakers, drop in your x-over into the door pocket to get an idea of how much space that eats up.

Other than that, you can look at Anir's speaker install as a pretty good example of what you'll end up with.

Thanks for the p[ics. I installed mine yesterday, the tweeter fit perfectly inside the enclosure for the stock tweeter and the X over fit behind the Hifi enclosure. Why did u put the X over in the door pockets.
The speakers sound really good.

Hmm. Good to know I can relocate the x-over. When I test fit, I didn't see a way to make it fit, but I guess I can try again.

Are you sure you have the same setup? My tweeters definitely didn't fit the stock pod. The tweeter made the housing bulge.

Glad you were able to get you speakers in. Don't they sound a whole lot better than the factory junk!?!

It s the same setup Alpine SPX 177R. For the tweeter, I removed the stock tweeter from the housng and removed the stock grille, then the Alpine tweeter fits perfectly inside the stock housing. I ll take pics in the AM and post them.
