scratch or paintwork?

If the seller owns a body shop, he can probably polish out the area... I would not respray either.

The key to this is that the scratch is on the right rear. After the enjoyment of driving this car for a few months you'll forget all about the scratch on the side you never have to look at as you enter and exit the car!

If the rest of the car is good I would just get a discount on the paint. Unless it's a no-mileage, owned by the Porsche family kind of car retouching a light scratch is neither here nor there. I made the mistake of getting the garage I bought my car from to fix a few minor scratches and I regretted it almost immediately as quality of matching/blending was not good. In the end I got most of the car done (when I changed my nose) in order to put right a few badly (but spread out!) bits of respray. Unless you know a really good specialist who know how to match and blend metallics don't even think about getting it re-painted.
