Default Intermittent engine oil pressure warning light

Sitting in traffic today at idle, my engine oil pressure idiot light comes on. Analog pressure gauge still seems to work fine. Pressure shows just under 1 bar at idle fully warmed up. When I take off, the light goes out as the pressure increases to 5 bar. Every time I stop, the light goes on. Every time I take off, the light goes out. So it seems to be related to pressure, but it doesn’t appear as though I am having a pressure problem. Idle shows about 750rpm.

Contacts in the gauge? On the sender (which would be a bummer).

Anyone experience this on a 993?

How is the oil level?

Sounds like it could certainly be an electrical contact issue though.

Seems to me I read in the owner's or shop manual that the minimum pressure should be 1.5 (someone else can probably confirm this). Mine typically runs about 2.0 - 2.2. At the very least, check the sensor. If it's the sensor, replace and test. If not, I'd avoid driving until you can have it fully diagnosed.

Andreas, oil level is 2/3 to full, perfect. Mobil 15-50.

Eric, pressure goes up to max as soon as I go off idle. I wouldn't think I could cause damage as long as I was showing around a bar at idle and then max pressure on the move, but it does make me feel uneasy driving it like this.

Thanks for the replies.

Maybe so, but it's not normal behavior. With oil being the life blood of the 993, it makes me wonder whether this might be indicitive of a bigger problem to come. However, I hope not - but good luck!

Agree with epj; 1 bar seems too low for warmed-up idle. Mine's typically 2+ bars, when the oil level is about 40% into the twisted section on the dipstick(or oil LEVEL gage reads just above the red(you know, 30 second idle on level surface)

Similar problem here: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/221553-help-oil-pressure-drops-to-zero-at-idle.html I'd get it checked if it were me...
