Default OT: What are "synchros"...

I have an old truck with AT. If I shift at a standstill from nuetral to drive and then to reverse (or opposite) without actually moving, there is a clunk clunk sort of noise and feeling. I thought it was the U-jionts but someone looked at it and thinks it may be the synchros instead. If this helps, it is much more noticeable when the car is warmed up...ie after highway driving.

Chris,

I don't believe that there are any "synchros" in an auto trans. I would be more suspicious of slop in the u-joints as you originally thought. There is probably some play in the rear-end as well, especially if the truck has seen lots of use.

Steve is correct. Could be the "bands" or the torque converter also.
