I was told that all 986's and 996 tips only have steering wheel controls. You are unable to shift using the floor shifter.

One of my problems with the steering wheel shifter is I would occasionally hit the buttons by accident at high speed and shoots my RPM's sky high.
Chuck, I've done that a couple of times, accidently hitting the "-" button. I use the floor shifter 90% of the time, but the buttons come handy when my hands are tied up (not literally), like if I'm talking on the phone or holding on to my girl friend etc...just kidding - don't tell my wife.

Button User here...call me lazy...

IIRC you can "disable" the wheel buttons by disconnecting a cable in the center console somewhere....I'll have to dig a little deeper. (gotta be cheaper than changing out steering wheels!).

Buttons and floor for me. I used to sometimes get muddled up when shifting mid corner, with the wheel at 180 degrees, shifted the wrong way a few times but it was at low speeds and RPM so no harm done (Except to the EGO)

I like the feel of the floor shift but being a right hand drive, the turn signals are on the same side, so you have to be multitasking with the left hand.

I make that sound like it is such a job...

Have used the steering wheel toggle switches almost exclusively without confusion (so far). Love my Tip but don't trust the kick-down and switch to M for serious driving. Still prefer my Sportomatic though for real 'classic' driving, we will never be parted.

I've switched my tip buttons around so that up is on the right and down is on the left. Just another variation on the theme :-)

99% floor shifter. I too have had the inadvertant down shift. A freaky experience akin to the V-1 laser alert going off at full volume.
