I'm dropping my engine this winter to replace the clutch/flywheel/slave cylinder/PS belt/plugs and other misc. bits.

I've damn near got myself convinced to bite the bullet and source a nice G50/21.

I emailed Gert and Harald hoping to find a good example.
Unfortunately Gert is dry at the moment. Harald has a few but needs $3,900 (non-LSD) and $4,400 (LSD) for his 40K mile gearboxes. Shipping is included with those prices.
As much as I want to do this, I've already told HOUSECINC (wife) that I could get one for the $3K-3.5K range. I may have screwed myself there.

Am I completely dreaming or can I still get a nice euro box in this range? I did a search and thought I was in the ballpark with my original estimate.

Also, if I do manage to find one I can afford, how much could I reasonably expect to get for my U.S. G50/20 in good shape? Also, who is usually looking for one of our 993 gearboxes?
If I can recoup some of the cost, I can justify the expense.
Any advise, input, or tips would be appreciated.

Leland
I bought a G50/21 from Gert last year, and sold my G50/20 to Harald. You might want to inquire if Harald will take your box in trade...I think my total net cost was close to $2500, but can't remember the exact amounts.

I agree with Phil and others about custom gearing. Even the -21 box has a rather tall 2nd gear.

This talk about 993 gears prompted me to take a look at all my 993 transmission stuff. After doing an inventory, I see that I have everything to build up a G50/32, that is a 993 RS box. I would do it with a slightly shorter 6th gear, as the stock RS 6th gear seems to be set up for high speed cruising.

Also the trans would have a motorsport LSD, steel sychros, the good RS shift forks, and my own special mods to the detent plate which everyone seems to like.

PM if interested,

Thanks,

Chris Cervelli

Chris, I am all over that! Sent you a PM. With respect to the g21 and deals gone south here on the renn I would suggest that if you source from Europe you use a known quantity i.e. Harald or Gert. I bought mine from a renner via Harald with RUF LSD, low miles, and ZERO problems. They only made that box through 96 I believe so the qauntity is growing smaller as we all upgrade!

The G50/32 is a nice box. I have one in my car and can recommend it for the reasons Chris above states.

Well I PM'ed Chris and liked what I heard.
He has also generously offered to take my good gearbox on a trade (2,500). Damnit, I might just do it!

I may be on my way to having a really sweet car here. (chipped '95 with LWF/Clutch, LPMM's, and a G50/32 gearbox.
She just needs to go on a diet. Only problem is it's hard to break away from those heavy comforts.
