Default Blue smoke on start up!

I been getting blue smoke from the exhaust when I start the car. But, only if the car has been sitting for a few days and in particular when it is park in an angle where the back of the car is lower then the front. The blue smoke only last for a short period of time and clears up. Also, I noticed the engine feels a bit jerky around 2500rpm when the engine is cold.

I dont think there is anything to worry about but wouldnt mind getting some comments.

TIA!

Smoke at start up only is a sign of valve guides getting worn.

Good Luck!!

It's totally normal to get a little smoke on start up after sitting a while. I've seen plenty of 911's with newly rebuilt engines do this even after break-in. Nothing to worry about.

From what I've read here on the board, I'd agree with Rick. Also, you might try letting the car idle for 30 seconds or so before you shut it off. On next start up, the car should not blow the blue smoke.

When these cars sit, oil from the tank slowly seeps back into the engine and tends to pool oil at the bottom of the cylinders. This oil sometimes will seep past the rings and provide a little two-stroke crop dusting vision behind you as you start her up. If the smoke clears after a few seconds of running, I wouldnt worry too much about it.

A 911 that doesnt smoke some is merely out of oil

I have the same thing and if the oil level is above the halfway mark on the stick it does it more. If it is below the halfway mark I hardly ever see smoke.

Don't worry about it if no excessive oil is being burned. It is quite common for air cooled as mentioned when car sits for some time.

Just as further info and clarification, this is not only for air cooled 911's, it's pretty common with all 911's, since the flat-6 has its cylinders lying on their sides, oil can seep into the combustion chambers as it cools and when car sits for awhile before startup.

I dont think I am getting excessive oil consumption. I had the car for about 3-4 months and put on 2500miles so far. I have added 1.5 quart of oil. I also tend to drive the car pretty hard. I usually run around town in low gears and keep the rpm over 3000 most of the time. I also tend to pull the engine over 6000rpm after warming up.

I've never had to add more than 1/2 quart between oil changes and my car now has 35k miles.. maybe I'm just lucky?

...and I think I'm safe to say I'm pretty darn hard on my car given it sees mostly track conditions these days....
