911 turbo impressions
I 've only driven the older turbos from the 70's and 80's, and I recall they had a raw power feel to them, with lag that actually intensified it.
Is the 993 turbo a similar feel, or is it like a naturally aspirated 993 with more torque down low.

The 993TT is much more linear when compared to earlier turbos, so much so, they dont feel as quick as the venerable 930....until you take a peek at the speedo that is With larger displacement, torque is increased down low. Keep in mind I am comparing early 930's to the later model 993. I have not driven the 964turbo, however.

I've only been in the passenger seat in a 994, but have driven more than a few 930s, some with north of 500bhp... my impressions...
The TT is definitely quick, but if you're expecting the same thrill as an old school 930... Just remember the 930 is light, RWD, manual steering, etc. An old 930 can be made an awesome 400+bhp track machine (1 bar wg-spring, larger intercooler, K27 turbo, lowered/indexed torsion bars, stiffer sways). It's edgy, lots of turbo lag, and it wants to bite you - I just can't think of any car as fun to drive fast as a 930. Period.
The TT, from the passenger seat, felt just like a 993 C4 with a lot more power. I'm sure a 994 with PSS9s, LWF/Clutch, Chip and K24s is even more impressive and maybe edgier, but still... the things that kill it are the AWD and the weight. It still hauls ***, but it's totally different.
Apples to oranges.

ive had a 993c2 and now have a 993tt.
While the tt is fast, it doesnt feel crazy fast, but u just happen to be going 30-40mph faster than u think u are.
Only when the car is floored in 4th gear 80- 115 mph do u really feel like it flys and u really have to hold on. I dont get this feeling at lower speeds, so the car is really too much for streets unless u live out west or have autobahn.

I agree with the observations above. I drove a 550+hp TT in LA last year and was blown away by its performance. Below 60, it felt as though I was going 30... above 60 at WOT, oh my Gawd! A 930 is a difficult beast to tame, while a TT is much more refined. Get one of both, then you can do all the comparisons you want!
BTW, I am partial to the 2wd in a Turbo. I would love to drive a GT2 or a conversion like Jean's... The AWD, in addition to all the weight, is too predictable and tame for my taste.

Having well modified 993tt with hybrid K24 turbos producing 500 WHP on a mustang dyno I can say its a handful to drive. I am amazed that the *** end still sends the tires up in smoke in second gear. The power overwhelms the available traction even in a AWD car. Full throttle in 1-3 gears requires constant attention. The wheel base on these cars is to short and narrow for that kind of power. The greatest thrill comes from doing a full throttle roll on in 2-3rd gear when the car hits 500 foot pounds of torque at 4,700 rpms at all 4 wheels.

If you drive one, you may very well...
buy one. These cars bone stock are a dream to drive...and a wee bit "bi-polar" in a way. In one minute you have the ultimate Blvd. cruiser with a great ride and all the comforts one could ask for.
Put your foot in it, and you have a raging beast on your hands. This may be one of the few cars available for the avarage Joe (One with a spare $70,000 in the piggy bank) that he can plop his butt in the drivers seat and have a reliable, well finished car that is nearly as fast as anything on the road, past or present.
Why don't I buy one? I am a NA guy is my usual rationalization. The real reason, I am pissing my money away on a farming business. But with a good crop this year, I just might do it. Could I keep the car bone stock....maybe I could resist the temptations...but for certain I would take it to the track!
I had dismissed the the TT cars until I drove one...ungodly wonderful cars. WARNING: Don't drive one...you'll be hooked.
As far as the 930 T car...great car if you can fined one in good shape that has not been butchered. The 1989 930 put out 282 HP, did suffer from Turbo lag and had somewhat antiquated 917 brakes and no ABS.
The 993 Varioram car has great brakes, even better if you bolt up Big Reds, no turbo lag, power steering, great air conditioning and creature comforts and is a blast to drive around town. These were my observations when I bought my 97 Carrera 5 years ago. I was seriously thinking of a 930, but choose the 993.
Admitidly, the 993 is nowhere as raw as a 930, but I can live with that. Now the 3.6 TT cars, another story...with the right financial climate, I'd buy one tomorrow...or maybe a late model Cup Car<<<Now that is the absolute ultimate for only $20,000 to $25,000 more. That is a 30% increase in cost a 100% more difficult sale to wifey!

964T Is Also Nice
I drove many 911s before buying my '95 C2 in July. These included a low mileage '77 930 (yellow!), a '91 964T and a '97 993TT.
I agree with the previous comments on the 930 and 993TT. As an alternative, the 964T is a nice balance of rawness and a few more modern features than the 930. I came so close to buying the '91 (2 different PPIs), but it came down to a $10-$15K rebuild in a 1-3 years, plus I really liked the 993 C2. Many of us know about the 964 oil leak issues.
The 993 C2 is plenty of car for me to learn to handle at this point in my driving experience. The 964 turbo also had some funky history (a RLer remembered it from Texas) and paint repairs; it's still for sale here in Chicago.
The ohmygosh turbo boost is still there in the 964T, but it was a blast to drive. I really liked pushing the pedal and watching the LCD bar guage while hanging on for dear life. I wonder what the 3.6T is like. Those must be really hot.
In summary, you might want to try a '90-'94 turbo. The 3.6T ('93-'94) are much more costly, though.

That is what he is saying Greg! The car I drove in LA last year would light up the tires in the first three gears while moving... my 69 Z-28 could do that, but it was a full-blown race car and had sprint gears. It is amazing to see. The first time I stood on the TT in third gear, I couldn't believe that we weren't really taking off that fast, and then the tires got their grip- WOW! The TT is so refined that it really insulates you from everything, including tire spin. I don't know how these guys with a 500Hp car stay alive.

I was fortunate enough to own the 993N/A, a stock 3.3 turbo in poor condition, a 460 hp 3.6ltr 964T and my current 700 HP 3.8 993TT.
I will just say, very unpopularily here maybe, that once you have owned a stock turbo or twin turbo you cannot go back to a N/A, I was shocked by the experience one week after owning the 3.3T and sold immediately the 5k mile 993 N/A, never looked back or regretted it..
I have 2WD and a lightweight car and can handle it ok with the right tires and setup, you do have to respect it though.
Buy a TT if you can without blinking, it is a new dimension to the pleasure of driving.
The 993TT is a far superior car to the 964T, mod it a little and even the pleasure of driving is as pronounced or more than a 964 3.6T, however the looks of the 964T are what make it a harder decision.
