DME RELAY FAILURE POLL

It happened to me on my 911... because I left the spare relay sitting at home on the kitchen counter after cleaning out the car.
$180 flat bed and it was home.... lesson learned.

Mine hasn't failed on me yet . . . but I've only had my 993 for a bit over 6 months now . . . I bought a spare and its in my glovebox. Vegas likes me . . . I'm not particularly lucky.

I drove the first 100K miles without a spare, then got nervous and bought one. Never had a failure.

Mine hasn't failed either, but I have a replacement in the car at all times.
Why take the chances? Don't you have a spare tire? Or spare fuses?
Heck, I even have spare belts in the car.

Never failed, but I have TWO spares. They are common to so many other series of Porsches, and I know folks who have had one fail at some PCA event, so I figure someday I may be able to help out a fellow P-car owner.

I had difficulty with a backfire on starting in the morning. Since it wasthe only part I had handy I replaced the DME with my spare-wouldn't be without one-to no avail. It turned out to be a spark plug wire problem.

I could see where this thread was going before I read the first reply. If the DME were $1,000, I doubt if I would have a spare handy. But for a part that's under $40?? Come on, that's a no-brainer.
I'd rather not be in the small percentage who have experienced a failure and got stranded or had my track weekend cut short by a session or two while I scrambled to find someone with a spare.

I had two fail on my 87 cab. The first cost me a $100 flatbed tow, the second, I was prepared for. Not a problem yet on the 993 in five years and 40K+ miles, but the spare is in the glovebox.

You guys kill me with your holier than thou attitude, I never said I wouldn't buy a DME relay I just wanted to see what the actual failure rate was among 993 forum members and it proved out to be what I expected. Approx 80% non failure rate or as one naysayer put it "A 20% failure rate".
I don't know about you but I'll always put my money on the 80% bet as opposed to the 20%.
The real reason for the poll is when something breaks we have a tendancy to share the bad news(DME RELAY FAILURE) much quicker than no news (no dme relay failure) and let our emotions get lumped in, due to having to pay for a tow truck or having to miss the important (boring) meeting that some said they might possibly miss. That takes away the objectivity and I wanted to see real fact and figures not just hear from the 20% who have had problems.
I also don't remember reading anywhere in the forum rules that I was not allowed to use the forum to gather information and suggest that if I post a poll in the future and you don't agree with the facts I'm trying to garner, DON'T PARTICIPATE and as a courtesy, keep you negative comments to yourself instead of trying to show me up with your vast amounts of 993 wisdom.
I want to thank all of you who participated in my poll and all of those who commented no matter what side of the fence you were on.
