I certainly hope they didn't try to stay in their house. Relatives of a co-worker who lived in the Gulfport area lost their dogs who they thought would be safe in the 2nd floor of their house that was near the beach. House is a total loss as it appears a 20ft or taller storm surge demolished their house. Nothing except the frame was left.
I will say a pray that all is well.

Sachin -
We have a place on the beach in Gulf Shores, AL (about 40 miles from Gulfport), so needless to say we have been following the event in the area closely. It appears Gulfport did in fact get hit hard. However, most people evacuated from the area. This area also did not have the congestion that New Orleans had, so if and when your parents left there area, they were probably not impeded (read: most likely they are safe and sound).
That being said, there is widespread power outages, even down the coast to Gulf Shore. Therefore, it may be very difficult to make phone calls to loved ones outside of the area.
Although there is a lot of physical damage in the area, the vast majority of people are okay--albeit displaced from their homes.
My point in all of this is that your parents are most likely having to cope with the aftermath of the hurricane, BUT they are safe. If they were there last year when Hurricane Ivan hit Gulf Shores, AL, they know how to pull though and deal with situations like this.
My prayers will be with you.
Please let us know how things are going or if you need additional information. We have some contacts in the area that are giving us first hand accounts of damage when possible.

My prayers are with you and your family.
A lot of folks from southern Mississippi and Louisiana have ended up in Memphis the last few days. From meeting and talking with a few of these folks, it is readily apparent that communications back to their hometowns are very sketchy at this time. Most likely, that is the source of this issue.

Everyone, thanks for the thoughts and prayers. My parents were not planning on evacuating. I'm praying that they changed their minds and did leave.
Once again, thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

I have a Aunt in Uncle in Slidell LA that headed inland at last report, although I have not heard from them since. Like others, a prey them safe like so many others. I try to remember not to speculate on hearsay with respect to storm stuff Sachin. Alot we don't know yet and I'm sure there are safe. Keep us posted.
