Question Performance makeover time for a 993

Ok, here I go... Bought the 993 in January and am ready to upgrade some components. I need some knowledgeable opinions for what I have in mind. The car has a factory limited slip.

PSS9 suspension with TRG adjustable sway bars - what diameters?
Carbon strut tower brace up front.
Carrera RS shift kit - where do I get one of these? Haven't found a web source.
- And now the big question. I need some advice on 18" wheels and tires. These will be used mainly for autocross/DE/Time trials. I realize that there is a tradeoff for compounds for autocross vs. high speed events. For the wheels, light weight is most important. Aesthetically, I prefer a 5-spoke design, but a BBS-type web is also acceptable.

Any advice and all recommended sources will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Craig

1- suspension opinions vary but most are happy with Bilstein (with H&R or ROW030 springs) and even more are happy with the PSS9 kits. It really depends on what your intentions are.
2- I am still not convinced that a strut brace offers much in a 993 coupe but am willing to be convinced otherwise
3- Carrera RS shifter consists of three pieces, the shifter, its fork and the rear rod. I have the shifter and fork and modified my stock rod to simulate the RS setup. Check with www.carnewal.com or simply order it from your local Porsche dealer as I have.
4- Wheels, another opinion item. There are many, many good choices and I landed on the BBS RS-GT for their strength and weight (they look great too).
5- Tires, for daily driving and occasional track use, I love my Yokohama A048r and have also used the Pirelli Corsas on previous cars. Both are R compound tires with medium to hard compounds similar to the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups but much better in the rain. For Autocross, you may want to opt for a tire that heats up and gets sticky more quickly than the ones I mentioned.

Good answers from Alon. Don't forget to try to give our sponsers your business. As mentioned Gert at www.carenwal-europe.com is a great source for 993 upgrades. Good luck!

Alon,

Do you have anymore pictures of your car you could post? Those rims look really sweet!
Thanks

"For the wheels, light weight is most important"
if lightweight is most important, why are you going with larger (18") wheels?

The adjustable TRG bars are 24mm front/22mm rear.

Your best bet for 18" wheels are either the MY '02 5 spoke 996 rims ro Fikse FM-10's. Guess which ones I'm partial to?

Alon,

Thanks for the reply. The BBS's are very pretty. If I may ask, how much do they run, and did you consider the 3-pc magnesium center race wheels? Admittedly, I have no idea how much the mag centers cost.

Regards,
Craig

I want to go to a "+1" setup with shorter, stiffer sidewalls, without affecting overall diameter too much.

These are not street legal as they can crack. I have a three piece version from BBS with the centers made of aluminum.

Thanks Alon!

The wheels look great. Are they the silver finish or the diamond black finish?

Mark,
Now I'm confused. According to their web site, sway bars for the 993 come in 25mm for the front, and either 19 or 22mm in the rear. I guess you're recommending 22mm in the rear?

Thanks,
Craig

Craig,

I always thought that they were 24mm/22mm. According to Chris Cervelli, the rear TRG bar at 22mm is a bit too big. I'd go with 19mm.

I have the TRG bars and have too much oversteer in my car. I'd love to have a softer rear, so to speak.
