Default Newbie Track Question?

I am attending a Performance Driving School in my 993 next week. It will be a combination AutoCross & Track Driving. In a lot of the pics I see posted from DE days, many of you guys tape up the front of the Car.

What is the purpose, and what kind of tape do you use? What areas do I need to tape?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Hi Brian, you can use the "blue masking tape". Commonly found at the home improvement stores.
It will stick but wont pull off any paint. I would tape your head lights, turn signals, mirrors and rear edges of the wheel wells for starters.
Is the event at PIR?

Yes, it with ProDrive at PIR, a full day of 1:1 instruction. A b-day present from the wife. So the tape is to protect form rock & other debris chips?

Very cool. Great track.
Yep for chip/junk protection.
Good luck. You'll have a blast.

We also use Racers Tape that is a cloth backed tape that protects the leading edges, paint, headlights, parking lights and wheel well openings from rock chips on the track or autocross circuit.

AKA: Duct tape. Very strong and durable. Just be careful because the adhesive is also very strong and on hot days may leave a sticky residue.

Residue is not too hard to get off - just DO NOT use real duct tape as that glue is made to be permanent and will remove your paint.

Signal lights and headlights are taped to help prevent breakage or chipping for gravel being thrown up (and to prevent glass falling on the track if one of your lights does get broken). On mirrors and wheelwells, etc. it helps prevent chipping.

make sure you tape the leading edge of the front splitters or they will get sandblasted.

Actually Racers tape is semi permanent. Duck tape can become permanent and potentially damage paint when removing. That is why I stay away from Duck tape.
Plus Racers tape is easier to work with and remove.

Blue "painters" tape works great, comes off clean, no residue.

Thanks guys. I'll pick up a roll prior to going to the track.
