The BMC and K&N filters provide a modest gain, as long as you keep them clean. If you change your stock filter often (say 2-3 times a year like I would here in NorCal) then the oiled filters are more economical which I think is the biggest advantage. The key with any filter is cleanliness.

There are a lot of stories about MAFs and oil... noyt sure I believe them, but I would not "over oil" my filter.

My current car has a custom, carbon fiber airbox and a cone filter. Fits under the 3.8 rsr wing. Makes power.

Both BMC and K&N are used in high levels of motorsport - Ferrari and Minardi use BMC in F1 and Honda (along with the rest of the Indy car paddock) uses K&N in the IRL engines. Both, in my experience (in these installations) have performed well so I believe both are reputable manufacturers. As for this particular installation, for me the K&N works well, seems to fit the motor sound air intake OK. As for performance improvements....... maybe you would see an increase in mass airflow on a flow bench, but is it something you would notice in the car - I doubt it

I think if you carefully folow the instructions you'll be ok.
It's always amazed me how much time people have to spend cleaning a $50 filter to avoid having to spend $20 each time it requires replacement. Time is money. Every time I R&R a $20 filter in 5 min., it saves me $60 over the time spent futzing around with cleaning and re-oiling the K&N. I'll admit that I used to do it.. but for the negligable gain (in a number of vehicles, especially motorcycles it's a loss in nearly every case) and the extra time oiling takes.. stock fitlers are by far the cheapest and quickest way to go. But hey.. if ya enjoy oiling filters.. K&N is a great way to burn up some spare time.
