Mike, I bought my S6 Avant new in August of 02. I was searching for the car that balanced utility with performance knowing that there would inevitably be some compromises. The car has been excellent. It's great fun to drive, has a nice sound when you push hard on the loud pedal, and hauls a fair ammount of stuff. I haven't had any major service issues as I approach 60k and it cruises without any drama at twice the speed limit. I like mine and am disappointed that I've got to go to the smaller S4 when it's time for a fresh ride.

My girlfriend and I are talking about getting rid of her 2002 Rav4 LX for something more sporty. The S6 Avant falls nicely into that category. We have two Golden Retrievers and need to have room for them. Hauling stuff isn't really necessary since I have my battered F150 for that. What is the maintenace like on the Audi? I loved my mother's 4000s that I picked up in Germany 20 years ago, but that is my only experience with the brand. Any other perspectives out there on the A6 Avant?

You may also want to consider an Allroad. I picked up an 01 6-speed in the spring. I put a set of H-Sport sway bars on it and pulled the power steering servo relay. Its a lot of fun to drive, practical, and I'm getting around 19 mpg in the city. Not bad for a 4200 lbs. sled.

thanks so much fellas.
i'm pretty much sold on the s6. they are quick, sexy, and rare. the thing is, there are only a dozen or so available in the country (with lower miles and coverage). they are either in cal, or new england. i of course, am in chicago. so this will be a purchase sight unseen. is there anything to look out for with the s6? any questions that need asking besides the standard used car queries?

The S6 is indeed a great ride. Personally, I have an A6 Avant supercharged with a PES G2 (Eaton) blower, H&R coilovers, and lots more. They are awesome cars for highway cruising for sure. I take mine on businiess trips all the time, and find it to be quite a pleasure to drive for a two ton grocery getter. I've even had mine out on the track a couple times at DE events, and it is very capable for its size.
The only common S6 flaw are somewhat often reported high speed vibrations, but the consensus over on audiworld.com is that they are just very particular with tire balancing variations.
I also am in the category of Golden Retriever owner, which is the very reason I drive a C5 Avant. The only thing to think of is the claw marks on the painted rear bumper - clearbra or a shield of some sort is a must. Oh, and don't get a black interior
Anyway, if the near 40K is a bit much for the daily hauler, the regular A6 Avants are dirt cheap at the moment - very soft market. Fully modded I have maybe 25K in mine, and she's been quite reliable in the last two years. I purchased an auction lease return with 47K miles, and now have 75K on her. Either way, you'll love the audi.
